999 Battery Retaining Bolt

  1. I've had no such problem.
Must have been replaced by the other owner...

  2. Ducati use very soft material for their bolts so they round off very easily, they are also very liberal in some areas with loctite which doesn't help.

On 748/749 (9**/999) bikes they did not use torx bolts anywhere apart from certainly on some injector fittings on the 748 etc.

  3. Over the course of last winter, I replace all the fasteners I easily and practically could, with stainless and even some titanium. I used marine grade where it was available.
Where they were visible, I polished them first, spinning the Allen bolts up in the chuck of a drill and going through grades of wet and dry before finishing with stainless polish to get a mirror finish.
Much more satisfactory than cheesy steel and nice and sparkly without being overly blingy, as with coloured fasteners.
What I was most pleased with were stainless Dzus-style fasteners from Racebolt. They look great and actually work better than the oem ones, having a noticeably smoother and more positive action.
I replaced all the disc bolts with titanium ones but this produced a 'duh' moment when I realised this was what had stopped my speedo from working and also caused an engine management error. The speed sensor works off those bolts and titanium ones have no magnetic signature!
I really didn't want to have to revert to manky steel ones, so got my thinking cap on. My solution was to get some steel ball bearings from Halfords and embed them in clear silicone sealant inside the Allen recesses. Worked a treat...
