Air tube filters

  1. They fit exactly the same way as the filters fit into the standard tubes - take one apart and use this as a guide.

The "flap" at the front is used to hold the front edge of the filter in place. Use that as your reference point and persuade the rest of the filter into the channel/runner.

    tubes this way:

    filters this way in relation:

Remember that the filter starts at the bottom of the tube entrance and then rises at about 30-40 degrees so by the time you get to the wide bit of the filter it's at the top of the tube. To complicate things I think they also rotate slightly!

It's a really fiddly job, but worth the effort!

  2. Air filters fitted today. Wasn't as bad as I thought. Took @antonye 's advice and fitted them with the original air runners open.

  3. Nice ... just wait until you take them out to clean/re-oil and then wonder how the hell you got them in last time...

  4. I used the MWR over-the-stack airfilter on my 996sps, its the one with a cage inside (important!), this one does not rob a hp compared to no filter at all, tried many times in the dyno, identical output all the way from go to top end.

Over-the-stack airfilters have a bad rumor from the ones without the cage inside as they will collapse on the stack and rob ~5hp once they collapse.

Over-the-stack also has the benefit of protecting your engine from eating grovel incase of a crash and grovel finds its way between the tank and airbox.

MWR AIRFILTERS and scroll down to third filter Part.nr.: MC-020-94

  5. It's not about performance, it's about filtered/still air volume available to pull through throttle bodies as well as disrupting the flow of air around the stack (see: venturi effect) as both of these affect throttle response.

The air filter was designed to go into the tubes as it gives a big volume of filtered air available for the engine to suck in. If you fit bellmouth filters there is no filtered air available; the engine has to suck it through the filter. It also keeps things clear of the bellmouth to ensure a smoother flow of air into the combustion chamber.

The dyno power output doesn't tell the whole story.

  6. Id say its enough filtered air with the MWR else power would have suffered.
If power is there so is response, they cannot be separated as theyre the same, we differ in opinion here yes, no sweat. I do work with tuning these bikes so I would know :) I get it if some of you think its too good, no worries, it is.
(Worth mentioning is there are alternatives to MWR, Im in no way affiliated with them.)

If MWR and no filter at all is equal then both setups are sufficient regarding supplying fresh filtered air, hence the restriction isnt in the amount of readily available filtered air, its elsewhere to be found.
Currently I have a tuned 1198cc engine in the 996sps and the airfilter still isnt restricting, see? No filter to filter still equal output.

But Im not here to argue, just put my 2c in as Ive tried airfilters a lot in the dyno, and hopefully enlighten some in this field previously dictated by human mind that likes to see pretty things around the intakes while the engine couldnt care less ;D Ask the engine is my parole.

  7. I know this is an old thread but I’ll be fitting carbon air tubes and airbox on my 998 over the winter and I’m after a little advice. I’ve seen the bmc filters (the ones that look like k&n style) and I’ve also seen the mwr mc-020-96. The mwr ones look like they might flow better air but any advice would be great. It’s s road bike not a track bike. Cheers

  9. I would wait until you get your air tubes, if your lucky you might get a pair that will take the standard filters.

  10. I've already ordered them mate, I think there's only DP ones that cater for the std air filters?

  12. Mine take the standard filters and I don't think they are DP ones.

  13. I went down the BMC airbox panel route after my sock filter collapsed when I tried to remove it to clean, so I think I dodged a bullet there...
BMC were a little expensive but simple to fit.
on the dyno I had my 996 set up without filters ( because of above) and when I re tested it with the filters fitted there was only a 1.2 ps difference.
ill get it remapped this year to match the added filters though to make sure all is well.
I do like the look of the MWR set up as I would expect the increase surface area would assist in the longevity of maximum filtration vs blockage.
