  1. you've hit on an interesting one, and I can't quote any facts but allegedly it's wise to give the majority of zero calorie/sacharin added drinks a wide berth with overall health in mind.

  2. Agree, the sugar is replaced with 'shite' like aspartame which is a lot worse for you, drink the full on sugar stuff or water.

I believe beer is good :p especially Guinness, it said so in adverts :upyeah:

  3. I'm not sure what muppet was on the radio telling you all this Zhed but it ain't so. Our brains might be that dumb but our bodies aren't. Blood sugar levels are constantly monitored, mostly, by the pancreas. When it detects blood sugar levels are too high it releases insulin which, amongst other things, speeds up the rate at which glucose transfers into cells so it can get used as fuel and tells the liver to start sweeping the excess out and make glycogen and fatty acids out of it. When the pancreas detects blood sugar levels are too low then it releases glucagon which tells the liver to start breaking down its glycogen and fatty acid stores and release more glucose into the blood stream. Just because the brain is fooled into thinking the drink is sweet doesn't mean it can override the basic biological process.

As @Harry Bell says above artificial sweeteners are not the best; in small doses they may be acceptable according to current health knowledge but there are people who massively over indulge and drink several cans of the stuff each day.

This is all making my brain hurt dragging this stuff up:( so I'm back off to my shed to finish refurbishing my wheels and where I have a supply of Snickers bars:).

  4. I think she was a professor of endocrinology but I’ll try to dig up the show from BBC Sounds to confirm and post the link

  5. "Just because the brain is fooled into thinking the drink is sweet doesn't mean it can override the basic biological process." I can heavily relate to this, with Hiatus Hernia you might naively think that you could relieve the problem by overriding stomach acid with medication, but it just doesn't work in the long term, the body is way too clever and the acid is a necessary ingredient in the whole digestive system.

  7. I can’t find it on the R4 website, probably because it was just one story amongst several in a magazine style science programme.

I found this however, which appears to reference a similar but not identical study. They appear to be saying that the sweet taste combined with no calories tricks the brain into consuming more sugar. But that might be because the study was conducted by psychologists who of course would be predisposed to attributing the effect to the brain whereas endocrinologists would want to attribute it to the pancreas.

You say she’s a muppet but is it really so far fetched to postulate that there might be a psychosomatic component as she suggested? For instance, we regularly salivate at the sight or even the thought of food or achieve partial and shameful erections when looking at whatever @AirCon has posted in the Random Picture Thread that morning? So it’s not a huge imaginative leap to propose that the pancreas may also get triggered in a similar way.

  11. I'm in the gym 5 times per week, mostly weights and some work on the bike.
I use lighter weights with slower and more intense reps than I used to.
You can tell who does and doesn't exercise at a 3 day Euro!
