Anyone On Here From The Us?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Advikaz, Feb 18, 2018.

  1. I've been to the US a few times for both work and pleasure. And yes, it's a great country. I like it. But something you need to bear in mind is that the UK is also a great country. I'm acutely aware of this due to the fact that over the years I've had to go and earn a crust in shithole countries. In fact I'm sitting in one now.

I've had the opportunity to take up a position in San Diego in the past but I'm too old now and not 100% sure I'd fit in. I'm a northern lad with a dark and cheeky sense of humour which doesn't always go down well with our cousins over the pond. But go for it my man, nothing ventured nothing gained. Remember the yanks have quite a strong work ethic (long hours anyhow) and don't like holidays. If you get your head round all that you'll be fine and dandy!

  2. I have to chime in to this thread for what ever it's worth.
I live in San Clemente Cali, amazing place but I travel all over the states for work. I haven't spend a lot of time in England but I can say the opportunities and standard of living here are hard to beat. Advikaz, Pm me mate. I'm happy to help any way I can.

  3. Thanks everyone for your input.

Regarding the hours, I’ve been told by my family that’s only in certain places and quiet the opposite in other areas, as with holiday etc. Both my cousins work in nyc and get more holiday than I do lol although my cousins husband doesn’t

  4. Yes they did a great job as well!,,

  5. I'm in the same boat as Advikas... Looking to move to the west cost in the next year or so but getting a work visa prior to a formal job offer looks to be very tough.

I already have a Social Security Card/Number as I lived in Houston for three years as a kid back in the 80's but I've been told it's wont help one bit as I've been out of the US for so long my staus has been abandoned. Gutted!

I got some good advice from this forum... Not what I wanted to hear but helped non the less - http://britishexpats.com/forum/usa-57/

If you want legal advice re moving to the US, you'll be looking at £500.00 for an initial consultation. I called a few specialists in the UK and US and they wouldn't say a word until I'd parted with £500.00.

  6. The USA is on average the wealthiest and most technologically advanced nation on the earth, with some of the most sophisticated and highly educated people. It is also socially backward, with great inequality and pockets of severe poverty, ignorance, and injustice. Everybody knows that the US is a huge and immensely varied country which cannot easily be summed up in a paragraph. But I have just had a go.

  8. For all it's faults I'd still rather live in the US but I wrongly assumed a Brit would be welcomed with open arms... Wrong answer soldier! Join the the F*&in que!

This is true where US immigration is concerned but once you get there,as a Brit, you WILL be welcome.

  10. Just to re-ignite this debate....my brother came back from Milwaukee on friday (he was there for a week on business). It was amazing to hear that people live like that....ill try to summarize...

    1. He thinks Milwaukee is currently the murder capital bar one or two other cities.
    2. The office he was working at has in the last month had to bodies dumped in biffa bins...apprently the cleaners found them.
    3. The lad he works with carries a Glock at all times (conceal & carry is legal in that state)
    4. Apparently most of the trouble is racially motivated. Theres a fast food outlet called "Popeye's" It been hit (literally with gun fire so many times) the front glass is bulletproof and the drive in has had the bulletproof glass replaced with sheet metal as they could shoot through the bit where you receive your food and look through the glass at the same time while aiming. So literally you drive up, a metal flap opens and all you see is a couple of hands passing the food out.
    5. The law was changed in that state where apparently (and i didnt know this) if you were a copper in say, Milwaukee, you had to live in the city limits. If any naer-do-wells knew that a copper lived in a certain road but didnt know where in the road....the whole road was on the receiving end of a drive by with automatic weapons.
    6. They changed the law so the cops could move to the outskirts, so most of them did and the house prices dropped considerably because of it.

    Sounds incredible doesnt it!

Yeah, St Louis isn't what it used to be.

  12. I lived in the Rockies in Colorado for five years or so. Beautiful place. Wonderful people. High standard of living. Never locked the door. Since I left the Columbine school massacre and the Batman cinema massacre happened 40 mins drive away.

  13. I dont doubt there are nice, safe places to live...(id love to live there) - granted that was quite extreme but it does make the UK quite safe in comparison....

  14. I meant more that you can never predict how violent it can suddenly be in the USA. Access to automatic guns makes the potential for disaster huge.

  15. Theyre not too keen on bikes filtering. Ive had huge trucks and cars try to slam me off, close the gap whilst Im there etc. I then found out its frowned upon. That was Oregon, other states may be more forgiving.

  16. hmmm after watching Love Actually, I was really, really convinced that they had a special taste for British blokes lol
