Battery Acid

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Robarano, Jun 2, 2019.

  1. Turns out that you can't buy it anymore (Sulphuric, in a concentration above 15%) unless you have some sort of licence. Presumably to stop our young cherubs on stolen scooters in that, there London chucking it in the face of some old granny.

So I have a new battery (empty) that I can't fill. Can a motor factor do it for me? Or should I just buy a new battery? *

*Assuming I don't get a knock on the door from CID in the next 24hrs after spending some time tonight googling for acid. o_O Although I was also searching for "How to dispose of a body" :eyes:

  2. Probably easier to buy a new battery to be honest, just fitted a Shido lithium, it weighs nothing and fires the bike up fine,

  3. 6v batter for a scooter from 1978, so don't think I have the option of a LiPo. o_O

@bootsam gave it to me, new in a box when I bought the scooter from him. Bloody rip-off merchant, that one.

Oh, Sshhhhh. Don't say lithium :bomb: when @Exige is online. :eyes:

  6. Google Shido battery fire and see how many hits you get, we'll all be driving round in Lithium battery cars soon, it's the future you know, I've seen it Time-Machine-1.jpg

  10. ^^^^^with Dave on this one,but i've just typed in google "can you still buy battery acid",,,,and adverts have appeared so it is possible :upyeah:

  11. My local motorcycle shop fills mine up for a nominal charge.

I did investigate the certificate required to buy battery acid a while back and it costs something like £35/36 per year, If i remember correctly. Anyone can apply for it and when you buy online you quote your certificate etc. and then you can purchase small quantities. One site i looked at supplied two litre bottles of acid.

  12. My workplace has at any time up to 40 000L of 98% Sulphuric Acid and 200 000L of de-mineralised water so I'm covered, but our batteries are supplied wet and charged.

  13. I have a bike with Lithium battery - I won't risk a 1098R with one unless it has been modified as I know of one that burnt, simple  carry on, nutters :bucktooth:

  19. Last week I bought a Yuasa YT12 , ordered it over the phone, went to collect and was told it wasn't ready for me as they [motor factors] had to fill it, charge it and test it before I could have it. Some EU reg apparently.
