If you just want real world car reviews the internet is full of them. What Clarkson did was move the show into new areas and then got stuck. The BBC need to think long and hard about what kind of show they want to put on. Trying to simply recreate Clarkson, Hammond and May would be a great mistake, particularly if Clarkson, Hammond and May are going to turn up on a rival platform. Whatever the BBC put on it will live or die by the ratings and we can chose to watch it or not.
If you want reviews of average, or slightly above average "aspirational" cars, done by people can drive cars fast, then watch Fifth Gear - you know, that programme made by people who used to be on Top Gear, that's not as good or as popular as Top Gear... If you think Top Gear is actually a car programme you've sort of missed the point.
Top gear is a rinse/repeat format with one presenter in the dark ages, one who looks like a little boy lost and the other dull as ditch water. Lets hope we dont get more of the same.
"Dull as ditchwater" and BY FAR the most popular thing the BBC make - they must have been doing something right... You can guarantee it won't be the same - with that egotistical ginger freak in charge it's bound to be worse. Chris Evans' will do exactly what he does on everything he's on - pay people to laugh at his crap jokes, surround himseld with sychphants, and twitter on about how terrible it is to be rich and famous... Now THAT will be dull !
How is that possible? Didn't the V2 go up pretty much into space and then come down again on a near vertical trajectory at enormous speed? Fighter pilots are supposed to have intercepted V1s but that was by flying alongside and flicking them over with a wing tip.
I vaguely remember hearing Baxter give an interview about some of his wartime experiences. As I recall he said he was leading a flight of spits flying a patrol and they were conducting strafing low level when the a V2 was launched right in front of them. The rocket was literally just getting off the pad when one of his flight, an Irishman, I think, not Baxter engaged the V2. Baxter was aghast as if the pilot had been successful and destroyed the rocket the subsequent blast would have taken out not only the Irishman but probably the whole flight. Fortunately he didn't and the rocket continued on its way. It was a very long time ago but I'm sure the interview must be on YouTube or the web somewhere. I always thought he was a first class commentator and a gentleman, really miss his style of informed, laid back commentary, only speaking when he had something to add. I remember he used to commentate on Farnborough and it was broadcast every day the show was on by the BBC. Wish we still had shows like that instead of all the reality rehash we get now.
Aha, yes, just after launch would be the only point at which it could be done. Full of explosive and fuel at that point though... Yes Baxter was ok, much better than some of the earnest types they used to have on there.
I think EastEnders does well too, doesn't make it good. Not in my eyes anyway. You obviously have a lower enjoyment threshold than me but that's ok.
I agree, it's a fair point - each to their own... But I'm just pointing out that A LOT of people, worldwide, do like Top Gear.
I was thinking last night just how bad the BBC could make it, if they really want to kill it off in one series... I came up with putting in two co-presenters, both as irritating, smug and annoying as the ginger one. The "perfect storm" would be Chris Evans, James Cordon and Chris Moyles. I reckon that would have the viewing figures down to single figures within three episodes...
Wasn't the whole point of this thing that it was just a political excuse for the BBC boss to sack Clarkson because he didn't like him? From what very little I could be bothered to read about it the actual incident wasn't a big deal at all and even the producer who got hit didn't actually give a shit?
Not sure, the rumour is clarkson was offered his job back before evans took it, so that would suggest not! to much b.s. on it, we demand the truth lol.
