Best traditional Inns to stay overnight?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Loverobot, Nov 15, 2013.

  1. You need to get yourself to Poland. They only send the ugly ones here...

  2. Not a hotel as such but I recommend the Hull to Zeebrugge ferry. Take the 2 for one option For about £130 you get a bed dinner and breakfast both ways. Ride round the battlefields for the day call in the tobacco warehouse if you are a puffer and then back on the boat

  3. Just come back from what is at least my 3rd stay at the Bear's Paw, Warmingham (near Sandbach, Cheshire) The Bear's Paw | Luxury country hotel and restaurant in Cheshire.

Boutique hotel rooms upstairs, classy gastropub downstairs. It's not a "local boozer" where people will just come for a pint or two, but a great place to stop overnight on tour. Yesterday we arrived in the car but the previous 2 times we came on bikes - carpark is large, level and not gravel.

6 local draught real ales on tap last night (between us we tried 5). The menu includes some proper pub food favourites such as steak and ale pie, fish and chips, steak but also some more "gastro" options (last night I had butternut squash and spinach open lasagne with a poached egg and blue cheese sauce, followed by cranachan for pud).

Rooms (which were all refurbished in around 2008 after a fire) have comfy beds, decent TVs, herbal teas and hot choc as well as tea and coffee, posh Arran Aromatics toiletries in the spotlessly clean bathrooms.

  4. Thought would resurrect this after a trip to Jersey via Wales.

I followed a couple of recommendations from this thread as did a scenic tour down Wales to Bristol (via Stonehenge too) first day then over on ferry from Weymouth. Back from ferry at Portsmouth visiting HMS Victory - really recommended - and back up through Wales on way back staying NW Wales.

On way down I stayed at The Hunters Rest Hunters Rest Inn Official Home Page just outside Bristol. Owner is really friendly and a petrolhead. Pub really lively, food great, room great. Thanks for the recommendation.

Stayed at the Cross Foxes 5 Star Accommodation Snowdonia NW Wales on way back. Very good accommodation and very cheap despite the food being brilliant -highly recommended as well.

If anyone is thinking about a trip to jersey on a motorbike using ferry, both ways were a doddle. Condor express was cushion over seat and a handle bar strap, bike on centre or sidestand, on the big traditional clipper overnight they have designated front wheel holders and very secure.

    Thanks for the recommendations

Anyone able to recommend any similar places in the South East - ie out somewhere near Norwich-ish and also further SE - Deal / that area?

    Thanks

  6. Good shout :)

  7. Seconded, very useful resource.

  8. Okay - resurrection for second time
The ones recommended so far have all been brilliant and are now regular haunts - especially the Cross Foxes in Dolgellau and the Hunters Rest
I need a similar type place near to bedford autodrome as doing a Palmersport day with people from work - this is North of Bedford and a bit south of Kettering
Must be loads of places around there - anyone able to recommend? Thanks in advance

  9. Depending on where you are exactly and how far you want to travel this place is about an hour odd from Bedford. The Cricketers, Clavering | Restaurant & Accommodation The Cricketers in Clavering near Saffron Walden. This a 16th Century Inn with a number of rooms (20) available including dinner and breakfast at a good rate.

It is most famous for being owned by chef Jamie Oliver's parents and he grew up here. Needless to say food is top rate and a three course meal can be had with one of their deals that they have running at the moment. Accommodation is quite large and comfortable and Jaime's parents are usually found to be running the place and behind the bar.

He provides much of the produce from his local allotment to the Cricketers.

I was there just over a week ago as it's near Duxford war museum and it is a good place to use for travelling in that area or for going to Newmarket horse races. It's worth the effort and the trip if it's viable.

  10. That looks great and will definately try it but its too far away for this trip - am coming down from oop North so prefer to not travel too far South of Bedford really

  11. You could try the Queens Head Hotel, Milton Ernest, Bedford MK44 1RU. It is very close to the Bedford Autodrome. I stayed there once and it was OK.

  12. Glad this thread has been resurrected as I'm off to That Scotland in May sometime, passing through Oban & probably to the outer hebrides.. (why? 'because they're there'). Back via Ullapool. Hadn't seen the motorcyclescotland webstite either so that'll help with finding accommodation...
    Cheers!

  15. well dont forget who yer mates are then, if you want some advise on the better routes around argyll give us a shout, avoid lochlomond and glen coe for a start.

  16. Resurrection number #3 !!

So next trip is Scotland West Coast

Starting Carlisle on a Friday early morning and then Coming back down to get to Ilkley ish Monday evening
Can anyone recommend a decent route and places to stop similar to the ones already recommended elsewhere on't way?

Never been to Scotland so looking forward to it...

The above idea for Fort William looks like an ideal place to stop first day though usually do about 300 miles / day and its 200 so maybe a bit closer than would go for

    Can anyone help?

  17. lots and lots.
think about this one. head for adrossan take ferry across to arran ride round it in about 3-4 hrs get ferry to skippness from lochranza stay at tarbart west loch hotel or in tarbart itself. ride up to oban via lochgilphead then on to ballchulish glen coe and down the road again. arran is a miniature Scotland and sell the best cheese in the world with some stunning views and i doubt you will find better biking roads in the uk as to what you will find in argyl . (when it's dry)

  18. Thanks Finm - looks amazing and definitely one for the future - however really want to head as far North as poss as never been to Scotland and have heard such amazing stories of how beautiful it is
