Brake Discs - Replacement for Monster

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Bikerbabe, Sep 25, 2013.

  1. I haven't used EBC discs,I have used EBC pads(HH) on the last couple of bikes.Maybe Im missing out on something but I think they are good pads.

  2. Hi Guys,

I Hope Someone can help. I have a 2009 696 Monster, in fantastic condition for the 34,000 Odd Miles it's covered. I've owned it for just over a 14 months.

Before I bought it (from Ducati Aylebury), the Dealer serviced and MOT'd it. I then bought it out to Switzerland where I live and Imported it.

Now, Once I have Imported it, it has to pass a technical inspection.
It failed in the Disc's being less than the marked minimum.
I brought this up with the Dealer who basically said "it passed the MOT" therefore they accept no liability.
Both fronts and rear need replacing.

By the way, the brakes are perfect, I use it up on the twisties in the mountains and never had any concerns about the brakes.

1st question. Any thoughts on the liability of the dealer.

2). I've looked at the options, for replacements and come to the following conclusions.
EBC. cheaper than OE, but not recommended (dealer said they had issues with EBC too)
OE. slightly more than EBC by approx. £60.00 for the set.
I found alternatives on Bikehps.com, but these work out at around £7-800.00 for the set.

3). I'm happy to go with OE, but sometimes there are better options, and that's what I've been trying to find out.

    Looking forward to your comments

  3. Why not buy cheapo Chinese ones, long as they will pass the inspection, then put the old ones back on as they are clearly ok

  4. I did look at them, but decided against it, but your idea could work!

  5. If they are the same as 1198 discs I have a pair of brembo ones on ebay. £200.

  6. Must be a swiss thing tho if front and rear are out. Not like a rear brake on a ducati gets much action

  7. They are very tight with the regs here, if anything is non standard, unless you have a full certification for the part that its approved by the manufacturer, it will not pass. In this case they are under the stamped minimum thickness, therefore it's a fail.
I've looked up to see if the 1198 and 696 parts are the same and unfortunately they are not.
what about Armstrong, anyone used them before or know if they are any good?

  8. Take it the discs have been changed then, or what do they say is min thinckness? Surely if they are under the manf tolerance they are junk...and I'd be amazed on such a new bike. You know anyone you can check over theirs? Local dealer?

  9. As you say if they are under the manufacturers tolerance, how could it pass its MOT?
