Hi all could I ask a daft question regarding chain adjustment on an Mts 1260s I’ve checked with the chain tool and watched various videos and it seems right with the chain tool if I’m doing it right lol but the chain still seems slack and it can be pushed upwards and will hit the underside of the swing arm is this normal just unsure as when I had the Fireblade there was less play Thx in advance
Once you sit on it and the suspension compresses it takes up the slack. Chain tension is pretty critical for a smooth gear change using the DQS. There are guides/protectors on the swingarm.
Make sure you have the bike in the Urban setting on the lowest suspension setting and on the side stand there will come a time when it runs out of adjustment and needs a new chain and sprocket. This comes sooner if you have a heavy right hand.
Hi Hugo thanks I didn’t know it had to be in urban mode when you say the lowest suspension setting sorry what do you mean thanks and not into wheelies etc just like riding so the right hand use is normal it’s only done 3400 miles so hope a new one isn’t needed anytime soon I’ve looked in the manual and it doesn’t mention any of this very strange is it a different way to adjust for different models? Mine is a 2018 1260s
"Mine is a 2018 1260s" So is mine (with 51,000 + miles on the clock). Page 353 of the owners manual has the details you need.
1200 DVT I know but no mention of bike having to be in a specific mode for chain adjustment. I have set the chain correctly previously and then changed modes and no change in chain tension
Morning Forum....jumping in on this. I know how to adjust the chain on my 2019 Multi PP so no issue there. In the manual it states to select Urban Mode / Rider Only.....so toggled through the menu & selected Urban mode (can't see rider only option) and when returning back through the menu's it still shows touring on the TFT. I've had the bike for a few months now & am in tune with most of the menu settings but the above has me stumped.....could someone assist with info please
Rider only is the standard setting, you can then add luggage, pillion or pillion and luggage to firm up the suspension.
Thanks for confirming the rider only as the std setting. I ride solo & only luggage used is a roll bag on the pillion seat & the usual top box contents. The bike was in touring mode when it arrived & I've made no changes to the ohlins suspension set up; came back from the Alsace on Saturday following a week of delightful roads/scenery & the bike performance & handling was sublime; only thing I need to do is adjust the chain slightly as it's a few mm below the mark on the chain guide tool....hence enquiring about Urban mode which the owners manual states the bike should be in to adjust the chain; that said, putting it into Urban mode will require an adjustment of the f/r suspension units & then once all completed, putting the suspension back to touring settings as well as the ride mode.
Suspension setting on the PP makes no difference, the rider/rider and pillion options aren't in the menu, as on that model it has the manual Ohlins, not the electronic Sachs Skyhook. Urban mode just effects the engine mapping so in this case is irrelevant. I've had both 1260s and now a Pikes Peak. The owners handbook, IIRC, states that chain adjustment should be done on the sidestand. I think that this is because the centre stand is optional TBH. There is a difference but having got it adjusted on the side stand I've marked the gauge with a sharpie on the centre stand to make life easier.
I also have manual suspension , I use the tool but tend to go slightly (1-2mm)above the line to be on the safe side and mine also feels slack. Has worked for me at least
