Right then.... Bit are off.... Is this knackered? Does this need to be split to fit a new one? Chris's link suggests it just comes out when the clip is removed...Mine did with some wiggling. But the worshop manual says split them and the sprag flange is held between the two. Those screws are flippin tight! Here's mine...
those screws hold the hub to the flywheel you need to remove them? why? that sprag looks bigger than the ones l have seen 68mm o/d
Thanks Steve. Doesn't the sprag sit between the two? How do you shorten the spring? Cut it and twist the to new half together?
you are right just looked at a spare flywheel no need to cut the spring it has a join -unscrew it its the screws on the back of the flywheel that need to come out
The last sprag I replaced I took to an engineering bearings supply specialist, after all, they are not made specifically for a bike, but are drawn from bearing stock by the bike manufacturers. The bearing suppliers matched it from their reference books and it cost a fraction of the prices quoted by any of the dealers, plus it was supplied over the counter - no waiting.
Well if you can re-join that spring you must have the patience of a saint and the touch of a watchmaker!
When you have it stripped down check the two faces the sprag works against the inner gear/flange and outer gear if you have any tram lines on the outer ==========, like so and l l l l l l l l l like so on the inner you might want to consider replacing the set. depends on how bad they are but it don't take much to make it slip. just my 2p. brian.
shit have not done it for about two years fiddly bastard may be a trip to the opticians on the cards!
Many thanks, extremely interesting. Any chance of any specific info like code numbers/ dimensions/ manufacturers etc?
Anyone know the size of the eight 8 torx screw holding the flange on? Looks like I need to buy some for my posh new rattle gun!
as said - spring waay too slack and does look a bit wriggly so I would try the SKF CR19778 Single Lip Nitrile Rotary Shaft Seal 2x2.686x0.375 inch Simply Bearings Ltd route unless you are going to get a whole new sprag? you can definitely replace the spring without dismantling anything? Does it look ok apart from spring - rollers not scored badly or overheated/blue etc?. Re: two friction faces - this is where pictures aren't really good enough sadly - it's hard to tell but seen worse. With a replacement sprag or fixed up spring i'm sure it will be good enough to work for now but you might want to think about replacing everything some time in the future. As long as it hasn't overheated badly then will be ok for now.
Thanks Chris, not sure that bearing seal spring will work on mine as the 1098 sprag is bigger than those used on the older bikes. Hence no cheap KTM unit either
Whatever you do never use Torx bits in an inpact gun. Are you sure the screws aren't shallow allen head, that uses the Allen keys with the dimple on the end?
