Diavel Oil?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Rick B, Aug 26, 2017.

  1. Correct. If there's something I don't understand or can't work out I refer to the manual.

If I can fix it myself I will. If I can't then it goes to the dealer.

  4. Does it? I cannot see the word Shell for the engine oil. It gives the viscosity and the SAE grade and "A good Quality oil".
There is no such thing as Diavel oil, everyday oil, not so good oil etc. All the oil does is keeps two bits of metal apart, and the oil has no knowledge of what bike those bits of metal belong to.
So all along the answer to your question was in the handbook.

  5. Fookin ell this is hard work, Didn't realise that posting in a Help thread would be met by the hierarchy of the "You ride a Ducati you should know better squad", if this is the case maybe the Technical Help thread should be changed to, Do your research first before we all try and belittle you ,Thread

  6. I'm sorry but I guess this forum section is really aimed at things that the manual doesn't cover. Really technical/intricate stuff that isn't covered in the official manual.

It's not meant as a short cut for someone that can't be bothered to do initial research on the simplest of subjects.

Or at least that's my interpretation of it. Sorry if that doesn't match your interpretation.

  7. I am not trying to belittle anyone, just trying to point out that all you need to know is there about oil and that overrides what any individual thinks is a better make oil than any other. Have you owned a bike before, what oil did you use in that?

  8. The recommended oil is Shell Advance Ultra 4 (fully synth) - nothing wrong with it , I use it

  9. Bob, It says at the top that Shell Advance Ultra 4 is the recommended oil for the engine lubrication circuit.
This is a motorcycle-specific fully synthetic oil.
They then say that any good quality. similarly specified oil will be fine.
So yes, the answer is in the manual as you say: use a good quality fully-synthetic motorcycle-specific oil.
I have personally come round to using bike-specific oil because it is formulated to take into account of the fact that bikes tend to share oil between engine and gearbox and gearboxes are tough on oil. Also, it has more corrosion inhibitors in it as bikes tend to be laid up in cold sheds and garages over winter.

  10. That is nothing new to have the gearbox in the engine oil, think of every A series engine fitted to every Mini for years since the 1950's. They coped just fine with old 20/50 mineral sh1te oil in them.
As there is no spec for bike specific with corrosion inhibitors (isn't oil by itself a corrosion inhibitor?) then the API spec of SF or SG should have everything that is needed.

  11. See, I knew it would and up like this. Another 'Which Oil Should I Use' thread to be overlooked by every Newbie in future :D

  12. The Diavel has a wet clutch ......

  13. And what has that to do with having the gearbox in the engine oil? Most bikes have wet clutches.
