748 Ducati 748 Regulator Differences

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by El-diavel8471, Mar 2, 2020.

  1. Hi All,

I have a 748 from 1995 that has had an 853 conversion at some point in its life (Not sure that's relevant yet)
I have had a few replacements over the years that I have always had done at a Ducati specialist or dealer etc. With my most recent regulator/wires burnt out issue, I decided to have a go myself but am confused with the required regulator.

The one that came off my bike appears to not be the standard 1995 one and has some of the later characteristics and is model SH673-12. I looked through endless regulator pictures online and ordered the one that looked closest, but upon delivery I notice that it's model number is SH579B-11.

They are exactly the same size but the new one (SH579) has thicker wires and an extra yellow wire in the centre of the loom. Seeing as the one that I have taken off appears to be a non pattern part, I am not sure what the correct regulator to fit is? Or indeed, could I use the new and slightly different regulator, without some apocalyptic even occurring? It appears to originally be for the 748r only.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Your original engine would have had a 2 wire alternator which on later bikes became a 3 wire alternator, hence the extra yellow wire. That is the total extent of my knowledge so hopefully someone will fill in the rest of what you need to know. Andy

  3. The three yellow wire reg/rec will work perfectly well, just leave one yellow wire disconnected.

  4. Thanks very much for the info. I think I remember years ago that the guy doing a regulator repair said he had changed to a later wiring loom, so that makes sense.

Thanks for the confirmation Steve, it is of great relief to know that I can just use the one I have had delivered! This bike has more regulators than services.

  5. I have had a three phase (3 yellow wire) reg/rec on my single phase 748/853 for years now, trouble free.
