Now you have a new relay, it would be an interesting exercise to remove the outer cover of your old relay and examine the contacts for pitting/errosion.

  6. might just do that,,,, get the grinder out tomo !

  7. not looking for any discounts etc, would like to do transfer this morn if poss,, so how much do i put in.. Rod.
also sent pm incase you dont see this ..

  8. Was driving, pm sent

  9. the relay is a miniature solenoid, so does have moving parts and can stick, so corrosion can not only affect it electrically but mechanically as well.
They are generic and not even bike specific, never mind Ducati, so I'm really surprised you couldn't find one to match in Halfords.
Replacing and relocating this at the same time as fitting a cable kit is a super-sensible idea, so sensible that maybe @Exige might think of recommending it in his instructions?

  10. cool,, pm received , and reply,, thanks Rod.

  11. yes , well cables in progress,,,,,, OR. the only ones that local halfrauds have are big things and 30 / 40 amp, not the type of thing which i have got from DG for £5..i would rather the security of knowing that i have the right one, and at that price :upyeah:

  12. so today i stripped down the electrics box and replaced the possibly errant relay, ,, since i am waiting to get exigys lead set before i rebuild i decided to give the whole thing a good clean as it was a bit boggin !!,, easy enough done but i find that all the cloth wire binding is pretty rotten and falling off ,, i have cleaned all the wires now wondering if i should rebind it and with what,, would just electric insulating tape do or is there some trick stuff for this.. also i read the advice to relocate the relay up under the seat or something,,, but looking at it the wiring is not long enough for that, also is it adviseable to relocate the main ( 40 amp ) fuse, and if so to where ??? ta Rod.

  13. This is not something I've done as yet but wish I had when I installed my cable kit.
Iirc the general advice is to relocate it to the top of the battery box, where you only need to remove the left fairing to get to it.

  14. thank you,, that would be a start :upyeah:

  15. @cherod as far as rebinding to tidy the wiring there are a few options, I wouldn't use normal PVC insulating tape as it will loose adhesion over time and IMHO is only used by those who don't know of the alternates.

You can get cable tape, or there is self amalgamating, the self amalgamating is stickier but don't use it where there is a likelihood of solvent contact, including petrol, or where temperature is likely to get very high.

    Tape

If its an area like the tail you also have the option of sleeving or spiral wrap, spiral wrap is the easiest to put on as you do not have to slide it over the wires, again though I wouldn't use where temps are high and it will be a little less flexible than sleeving, but easy to wrap and remove and probably be what I'd use, if the conditions allowed it.

    Cable Sleeving

Both these links are from AES, which I've found to offer good service at a reasonable price in the past

  16. yip. insulating tape on lenthes of loom is a total pain in the ring if yer ever wanting to go back in. will do nicely for quick fixes but other than that loom tape with insulating tape to tie at ends.

  17. ok boys, thanks both,, i have actually been thinking about the amalgamating tape,, did not know " loom tape " was available,, will try halfrauds a little later today ,, ( tho not hopefull !! )

  18. @cherod as Finm alludes to if you want to use loom tape what I'd do if going down that route is to also get a roll of self amalgamating tape and use that to seal the ends of the loom.

If it was me I'd purchase direct from AES, that way no hassle with searching the stores and you'll get the right product.

A not very good and far too long video of a rewire I did on a mate's Guzzi. I used the clear(ish) spiral wrap, I'd use black if doing again, but it does give you an idea. Nearly all of it was done using just the bundled wires and then grouping them with spiral wrap.

  19. Just a note re the 749/999 wiring - there is little room behind the battery box for the current wire routing so spiral wrap may be problematic depending on where it is used...

  20. does a grand job of anti chafing right enough.
