I used Tank Strip paint remover, and then a wire wheel on a bench grinder and it removed it easily with no problems, i have done about 4 cases like this
But they haven't been going broke for at least 10 years so surely they can now buy some etch primer now? My little KTM engine cases look like new...
On my engine restoration I used Por15 - Aluminium colour. I wouldn't do it again though, next time I would definitely look at Cerakote.
So ordered the main paint from ebay, prepped and sprayed the case with primer today. The bike shed is currently a temporary spray booth
Really pleased with the finish so far, thanks for the recommendations guys! https://youtube.com/shorts/pnU5Rs7zYLQ?si=YgFKv_1sCBqBUbDj
I'm in the process of repainting the engine on my 1994 916 with the green/grey covers. I had the guys at my auto paint store scan the cases with the optical scanner and then they made some small adjustments to get a perfect match to what I have. They did a match on the grey matt finish on the cam covers etc and a grey/green for the clutch and generator cover. Ill get the details off the cans tomorrow and post them up encase anyone needs the colours in the future. As for the primer, we used HS Body 961 Etch primer cured for at least 24 hours then the HS360 2k primer to layer up and seal off the chemicals in the etch. Cured for another 24hours then colour and 2k lacquer for chemical protection.
So for the grey on the valve covers and small bits the scanner came up with a Toyota colour which they had to add .5ml of one colour and .7ml of another to get it right for a perfect match, they then need a matt lacquer to give the original appearance. This is the can for the matt grey: The green/grey was more difficult, they had to adjust it quite a bit to get it right so they have saved the formula on there files under the code at the bottom of the label, give them a call and show/send them the label if you need some made up or for the exact ingredients. It needs a satin lacquer to look correct. This is the green/grey for the clutch and generator/water pump covers is this one:
