Replaced my own stator on a Monster 1000 about 1 month ago which I believe is the same. Purchased from https://www.rexs-speedshop.com/ They purchase them from RMstator and prior to posting will use a mega to confirm insulation. Cost me £130 and fine so far. Only covered about 1500 miles with a voltage monitoring device to check all well. No problems so far. From Ducati they cost around £460 but that’s the complete assembly.
Personally preferred a rewind also and a service offered by Rex speed shop also. However after discussion with shop it was going to cost much the same. My first stator lasted 30k and replaced under warranty however second lasted 125k but the former was starting to fall apart so not an option for me but worth considering. Here’s my old stator. But burnt?
They did mine on my 916. Highly recommended. Fast service. Plus they upgraded the 2 weedy yellow wires which overheat and burn out and assist frying the RR.
In the end I ordered a stator from Moto Electrical, as Rex Speed dont have one in stock. The RM Stator job looks to be a better quality item than the Wemoto one. I also have ordered a cover puller from ebay.
I also preferred the RM stator. Pretty much as per OEM visually with the exception of the yellow additional insulation coated on top of windings. As I mentioned previously just your luck regarding mileage using the same OEM stator. One short mileage as per your problem and the second massive but really burnt out in the end. No reason why the RM stator won’t give good longevity in my opinion.
While your talking about stators, i took a picture of mine whilst i was in there last month doing gear shift springs. It doesn’t seem burnt, but different colours. Is it on it’s way or just how they’re manufactured?
In my opinion not a problem. Will always discolour at the bottom as sits in the oil more. My own stator has looked pretty black for several years.
Well Dudes, got the old stator of at last ( do Ducati threadlock everything ?) and rather worryingly it looks pristine, no burn marks or any discoloration at all - will keep you posted. Best Regards from Sunny Drax.
Yes, Ducati do threadlock the stator - you wouldn't want it coming loose, and don't underestimate how much these things vibrate. Any signs of damage to the 3 pin connector, or the wiring to the stator? Can you share a picture of it?
I don't believe it; she has had a new battery, new reg/rec, full set of fuses and a new stator and she still dies when warming up, at 61 degC this time. I did not have the diagnostics wired up as I was confident but alas no !! The earths are good and she was charging at 14.2 volts when first started. No faults noted on IAWDiag. I will plug the wires in tomorrow when she has cooled down and report back. Is it too early for a beer ?
Last things first, it's never too early for a beer. Are the basics correct - TPS value, valve clearances, etc? Does the air temp sensor/engine temp sensor give a value that makes sense? I.e. before you run the engine if it's been left overnight, do you get ambient temperature values? Have you checked the crank sensor air gap? How many shims are fitted? Then I think you'd be in to having the throttle bodies balanced and idle mixture set up.
Cheers Turbogeek, the bike was fully serviced so the valves are good with Tbodies balanced, not sure about TPS reset, will investigate that one - is that on IAWDiag - will check. There is one shim on the crank sensor, that is the one on the front of the Alt cover I guess.
Hi Derek, no errors showing but its the next thing to change I guess. Cheers Itsamonster, you cannot check the airgap directly so you measure depths and heights with a vernier or depth mic ?
I don't know for your engine without looking it up, but many Ducati engines have a removable plug just in front of the cps allowing access with a feeler gauge. Clearance should be 0.6 - 0.8mm if I remember correctly,.
