I dont see things in black and white fin and I like a mystery as much as the next guy, but just because I dont understand something I don't automatically think mystic magic. Plus I dont believe this hogwash one iota. Next people will be plugging creationism and burning heretics. They'll happily slag the jihadi's yet sign up for this crock of pony shit just because some twerp with a twig stumbled into a river.
Try it yourself and see what happens or doesn't. It might surprise you. Science is a combination of experimental evidence and then a plausible theory that explains it and makes predictions which can then be verified. Sometimes you start off with the theory and look for the experimental evidence it predicts. Sometimes you start with the experimental observation and work up the theory. What you don't normally do is ascribe observations to magic, or just pretend that the observations are rubbish without examining them.
I have examined them. I tried it when I was a kid. The rods couldnt see the River Esk. I was born with reasoning abilities that allow me to spot crocks of shit from the evidence available without resorting to testing them further. But you crack on. I'll just watch on amused.
In 'theory', someone that practices divining (rather than dowsing) should be able to discover, say; Bootsam's birthdate without moving from their computer (and not by using Google etc). I was sceptical until three of my work colleagues and me had our birthdates revealed by a 'practitioner', who had never met us previously. It was done by the following type of questions he asked himself. "Was AL born between 1940 and 1970?" "Was AL born between 1950 and 1960?" "Was AL born between etc etc......" Each time the wire gave an affirmative movement, until he had narrowed it down to the correct year, then he started on the months..... "Was AL born in the first half of 19**?" (affirmative) "Was AL born in the first quarter of 19**?" (negative - no movement) "Was AL born in the second quarter of 19**?" (affirmative) "Was AL born in April 19**?" (negative) "Was AL born in June 19**?" (affirmative) And then onto the actual date using the same method of asking the specific questions. To get one person's birthdate correct might be a fluke, but four isn't luck IMO.
spot crocks of shit hmm, what about this one? Photo "My old bucket" in the album "my bikes" by bootsam | Ducati Forum
He runs via an internal combustion engine, fulled by hydrocarbons. He doesnt run by magic. Sure hes a crock but theres no mystery behind it. So I fail to see your point old bean aside from someone clutching at imaginary straws.
He? where could that statement take us? btw i loves your camper. 200yrs ago it would of been seen as magic. i am sure once you have finished it, it will be magic again.
I did this years ago, again with 2 welding rods bent at right angles and held loosely in each hand. It does work, why I have no idea, but it did pinpoint an underground stream on my parents land that I had no idea about. Must be a scientific explanation for it as I am as sceptical as the next man
The human brain is a phenomenal thing. According to Brian Cox on Human Universe (a brilliant programme, if you are missing it), it is the most complicated structure in the known universe. Some people's feat's of mathematics and memory defy comprehension, but the fact that they can perform them is not disputed. It is interesting to speculate how many other things the human brain is capable of, either through natural ability or through training. What does seem obvious is that it can do an awful lot more than most people ever ask of it. Maybe dowsing or divining are some of those things. Some unexplained things are clearly balderdash. I was interested in astrology (not so much the prediction part of it, more the character analysis part of it) and so looked into it. From my reading, it became apparent that it is just confirmation bias and is a complete load of baloney in every shape and form. I similarly have no belief whatsoever in soothsayers or anyone being able to predict the future through whatever psychic power. Levitation? Telekinesis? Seems unlikely, but I haven't really studied either. But when normal people with no interest in the paranormal just get on and use dowsing as an everyday tool, with no idea how or why it should work, then I tend to listen to them. Of course, if they then had to dig 10 wells to find one that contained water, then I'd say that they were wasting their time. But I reckon they wouldn't bother to do this as they would quickly come to the same conclusion after digging two dry ones.
Remind me: can the dark matter be explained by more black holes, or the mass of the black holes, or has that already been accounted for? I do find it weird when scientists say they are close to a theory of everything (GUT) when they also say that most of the universe is invisible and they have no idea where the matter is, nor for that matter (ho!) what the dark energy is. I can't help feeling we are scrabbling around on the surface. Maybe I could ask Dr. Cox.
I wonder how many are out there now, fiddling around with bent bits of wire to see if they can do it..........
