Oberon slaves (I have one myself) are designed to give a lighter lever by altering the ratio between master and slave cylinder, so the lever has more mechanical (or hydraulic) advantage over the clutch springs The downside of this is less movement of the clutch pressure plate for a given movement of the clutch lever. This will inevitably result in an increased risk of clutch drag. If fitting an Oberon slave results in less clutch drag, that can only be because there was some strange fault in the original slave or because the system has been bled better.
Just a quick update on what they said about my difficult to find neutral Yeah they are difficult , mines the same So still considering that one The quickshifter thing is apparently due to a false neutral between 5th and 6th ? If not under load it works like a knife through butter , but under load you get a huge flat spot which lurches you forward until it picks up , so I just don’t use it during 5th and 6th. So it still does it and it’s still hard to find ?? Ona lighter note I had some S22’s fitted , not really the right tyre but they almost make the bike turn as good as my old 2011 bike It still seems slower to turn in though ? First day out on them today
Just to add my experience with the clutch: First 200 miles, really awkward, always took a long time to find. Improved a fair bit at 600 miles with the first oil change. At some point around 3000-3500 miles, a night and day change. Almost always an easy selection now. Possibly related: when I first got the bike, the clutch fluid reservoir was pretty full. It's now at the top of the "N" of "MIN", so the fluid level has dropped. According to the manual, this is about the proper level the fluid should be to allow the level to rise as the clutch uses up it's friction material.
Hi guys, brief feedback from my side too. Tricky to find N until reached 300miles. After that, no problems at all. I had an Hypermotard before and trust me the problem went on till I reached 10,000+ miles. Here comes my question: I never manage rolling down to N from 2nd directly - always goes into 1st gear first (2nd-1st-N). Is this common?
I've done 12000 on my 2018 Multi and it's still very hard to get neutral usually takes about 4-7 attempts to fine it once stopped. I usually don't bother and just leave it in 1st when parked and I've got used to just holding the clutch in at lights etc. Also doesn't go in when still moving just goes into 1st. And, I do sometimes get a false neutral between 5th & 6th when on the auto shifter. Aha, Eureka, a light has just gone on, Perhaps if I come into traffic lights really fast and shift from 5 to 6 I will at last be able to get neutral and give my left hand a rest! Thank you poster you have solved a long ongoing problem!!!
Hey Marcello, I’m now up to 1100 miles and possibly getting a small improvement selecting N. But to be honest it’s possibly more down to me honing my technique and selecting it before I come to a stand still. For me it seems easier to roll from 2-N than kicking down to 1 and then back up, but as I said that’s probably down to what method I have practiced more than the other. And what has definitely made a difference for me is trying to find N much earlier in the coast up to a stop (i.e. while rolling a bit faster). However, the longer I keep going with this the more I am convinced the gearbox is faultless and it is as other people have stated a clutch drag problem. So I am hoping the more I drag/slip the clutch and give it the beans the more it will improve!? Shame they can’t get this sorted at either the factory or at a PDi check.
I have a 1260S and gear change has been clunky from day 1. I thought it was new bike running in and me not being used to the quick shifter but in the first 1000 miles it hasn't got any better only far worse. First post lockdown ride went bad after a 2 hour run. Fortunately just local to home at a roundabout gearbox went very stiff and clunky and the wife started head butting me from behind. Next roundabout no first gear, lever rock solid eventually got it into second to get it home. Dash now showing a dash instead of N. First gear has never returned now in Ducati workshops for warranty repair. Nothing external causing fault, camera in gearbox nothing bad evident. So engine out full strip and maybe 4-6 weeks before it can be started due to covid-19 staff shortages. Not a happy Ducati owner.
Well you got more than I did I got there’s fuck all you can do , learn your way round it 10000 miles and it isn’t much better
Second Multi here, 1200PP then 1260PP. The first gearbox loosened up after 2000 miles, the 1260 at 3000 still isn't as good. I like to think I've given both the clutch and box a suitably hard time from new. It's getting better but not perfect. I have the same problem as you between 5th & 6th. A big neutral if I'm not using the quick-shift and a stutter if I am. Not all the time but enough to irritate. Finding neutral will continue to improve, I hope, but 5th to 6th is just a 'feature' of the bike. Not perfect, but something I've learned to ride around. I've fitted Giles gear levers to both bikes, there was a bigger benefit with the first model and whilst it's not as significant on the 1260, still worth the investment. Plus you get rid of that god awful rubber!
I've got 29,000 miles on my 1260 and it's still hard to find neutral, and sometimes when shifting in the lower gears it sounds like I'm banging cast iron skillets together.
