From german forum http://www.sr500.de/wbb3/thread.php?threadid=44333 translation 1. post: For me war´s a nightmare to see her standing there burnt down. Since 2006 I have my SR 500 and now this. According to the fire investigator of the police, the gel battery (1 1/2 years old) is the cause of the fire. Fortunately no one has come to harm. I want to continue driving SR. Therefore: Give up is not valid! I look for something to build up or also a finished SR 500 -Bj. no matter. So I look into the garage, barn, cellar or workshop and send me friendly offers. Many thanks corner P.S. Can the frame still be used after the fire ? www.sr500.de emuega
We cannot open the pics on that site as we are not members. Can you put some of the pictures on here.... I'd say you can't use a frame after a serious fire... all depends HOW HOT the metal got? Sorry to hear your bad news. Why did the gel battery cause the fire? what caused it to fail?
The Yamaha SR500 went out of production in the late 90s so I suspect an old style rectifier that when it failed, the entire alternator voltage output got pumped into the battery, not ground. No battery made, lead acid, AGM, Gel, or LiFePo can survive that. Andy
Never seen a lead acid battery fire that wasn't dead shorted.. Boiling hot acid makes quick work of everything near by....
