A bit late, but I just ran across this post. Yes, another ECU (new or pre-owned) can be installed in its place. New ECU's are prohibitively expensive, but pre-owned items are always available on Ebay and usually sell for ~$350.00. There won't be problems with the immobilizer. There won't be problems with the mileage... that information is stored in the instrument pad. Likewise, there won't be problems with the VIN information... the BBS retains that information. It's a good practice to disconnect the battery when working on the ECU. Avoid touching the ECU pins as well. Static discharge can lead to component damage.
Black Box System. It co-ordinates all the CANbus functions between the dash, ECU, ABS and other components on the bike.
