1200 Help With Really Bad Noise

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Grahamducati, Oct 23, 2024.

  1. Hello All,
First time posting looking for help with my 2014 Multistrada 1200s Touring

Out on a ride today heard a 'knocking/rattle'
I initially thought (or hoped?) it was the chain rubbing (maybe on the centre stand)

It was quieter at higher revs

I pulled over, on pulling the clutch in there was a timing belt 'chirping'

Seeing there was no chance the chain was rubbing I restarted

Rattle continued unless the clutch was pulled in (I'm 95% sure of that, I was quite stressed :joy:)

Changing gear there was a drop in power (it struggled to accelerate) like the power was being strangled.

Came to another stop and the bike won't start again.

Got my self home (via the back of a trailer) and now I'm going mad wondering what it is

I did quickly remove the horizontal belt cover and there doesn't appear to be any issues with the belts (as in they're not shredded or have any damage) but obviously I've not looked at the vertical belt fully

Next step will be to drop the oil and check for flakes in the filter.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

  2. Strange one. If it’s clutch related, I’m wondering why it won’t start.

    Was the engine turning over?

  3. Yeah the engine turns over ... It doesn't sound great though... Knock noise when I tried it this morning... Then a screech (from the belts) ... Needless to say I won't be trying again until I've figured the problem

  4. Sad to read, time to pop the sparkplugs out first for me followed by a compression check if you have one and then if nothing found then hopefully oil drop will reveal more. I was hoping it might be loose clutch/flywheel/alternator but not sure going by the "struggling to accelerate" bit.

  5. Here's a link to my trying to start the bike (it's too long to post here) ... You can hear the knock as I try to start it first time .. just before it catches (and dies again)

The 2nd attempt at the end of the video you can hear the belt screech

    Thanks again

  6. Yeah compression test /dropping the oil tomorrow... And praying in the meantime... Lots of praying

  7. You sure you don't have a problem with the sprag clutch?

  8. Watching the video I had the same thought.

  9. I never thought about that (though to be fair I'm still in the panic phase )

I've never had Sprag clutch issues before

Would a busted Sprang be enough to make the 'knocking' noises on the move?

  10. You'd be surprised at how loud even the smallest knocks can sound. I'm not as techy as the previous posters, but it sounds laboured trying to turn over. Good luck!

  11. The older bikes used to have a knock when the alternator came slack which sounded like the clutch.
This also had an effect on the sprag

  12. now ive heard that it does sound like a sprag-type of screech but even a healthy one will be forced to slip if there is too much friction involved in turning engine over, so could just be symptom of "the main problem". You are right to not do this anymore. Other approaches:- take spark plugs out and see how bad it is to walk vehicle forward in 2nd gear.

  13. Unfortunately I'd be mentally preparing myself for major probs. It could be a sprag issue you are hearing, but I'd plunge for something else major first (perhaps the sprag is failing/struggling due to some resistance in the turn over of the engine).
If the bike was running, the sprag alone wouldn't cause it to lose power nor cut out. Before you strip, I'd remove the plugs and see if you can turn the engine over by hand.

  14. massive de ja vu here -
did you read the thread all the way through?

  15. Crank gone and it’s causing secondary issues/noises like the sprag to squeal. Hope I’m wrong

  16. Yep, just adding to the thoughts of everyone so the OP can be informed as poss.

Ps. I wrote my post as you posted yours! No, I hadn't read your particular post. But...go easy. :upyeah:;)

  17. I'm guessing you/someone you know has had something similar?

  18. Ear plugs.

(This post maybe in haste & not helpful)

  20. Let's see what the oil is like.
It tried to fire up on you video so it's not a broken crank thankfully!
