How To Turn A 999 Into A Sport Classic

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Connor, Dec 19, 2017.

  1. Great read! Love your projects. Can't wait to read your post in your other build thread tomorrow. Looked way to good to read in bed on my phone!

  2. Have you tried gripping the tank with your knees? If you slide across the seat you can put your inner thigh against the tank which works and it gets you ready for the corner too. I'm also working on weight off the pegs under braking when I get back on track which I think is going to help too.

  3. I do that but I end up needing to adjust my body position just before I tip in and it tends to unsettle the bike a little, alternatively I put my groin against the tank but I have the same issue

  4. Made a bit of a start on the repairs today, made a list.. got a little scared then had a beer. I made some new stainless steel reg/rec brackets and painted them up so that's one thing fixed!

  6. Replaced the tank cover/fairing brackets with some steel ones, only took 4 years and they broke 3 times... I got to it eventually. They were only meant to be a bodge to test fit the position.

Probably should of taken a photo once it was finished, painted and pretty. That thin 'leg' hanging off is for the fairing, made it thin so it'll bend easy and hopefully save the fairings and stop the rest of the bracket from snapping, also saving the tank cover if I ever have a whoopsie.

I felt bad being on this forum and making big ugly chunks of steel so I made some titanium spacers to mount up the tank cover. Coloured or natural?

I made a better belly pan bracket and repainted the side stand black too.
    IMG_20210228_160521.jpg

Hell of a lot better than the one I was sent with the belly pan...... IMG_20210228_145532.jpg

My engine needs to be painted badly.. it hurts to look at it. I can see me taking it out soon and giving it a sort out.

I've been waiting for nearly 5 months now for the new screen, I'm patient but Jesus that's taking the piss.

  7. I prefer the non-colored titanium spacer. Cheap anodization has ruined the look for me on anything but genuine titanium exhausts.

  8. I agree, looks a little tacky

  9. It's time to get rid of the horrible fake China exhausts! I originally bought them incase I binned it at a trackday, they'd be cheap to replace. So I guess I'll just crash with the new more expensive ones instead
    IMG_20210320_175704.jpg

A little modification to the link pipe and they should slip straight on, a little worried about the noise though. I'll have to pop to a pemprey TD and get it noise tested.

I can't explain how much it hurts to have that much of a restrictive baffle, chops 5db off so I can do pretty much every track in the UK which is good.

  10. I can confirm they sound as good as they look!

    IMG_20210403_200205.jpg

First run out around the Gower, I ride alot of bikes at work but everytime I ride this thing it makes me grin and laugh. They just don't make them like they used too.

....which is good, because it doesn't f**king idle! Some of you may have seen my please help me post in the technical section. I found some corrosion between the throttle butterflies and throttle bodies.
    IMG_20210405_120610.jpg

I managed to polish it out with some ultra fine scotchbrite, I've never wanted to touch the idle control I imagine they put fancy paint on it for a reason but it'll never idle right now with that corrosion without some adjustment so I had a play. Got it running alot better and it doesn't cut out anymore but I'm still not happy with it, I've been having cutting out issues since I bought it and it's annoying me now.
    IMG_20210405_122449.jpg

The injectors seem a bit worn now too which only being a historic one injector per cylinder system isn't fantastic, they're the single injectors too.
    IMG_20210405_152943.jpg

Managed to get some IWP189 12 hole ones for £50 on eBay, apparently they were used in the later bikes? Someone more informed can correct me. As far as I'm aware they were used on the R models to help with idle and low rpm due to the slightly different cam, which my bike actually has so it's probably not a bad thing to change them.

The bike has been overfuelling badly for a while now, I've mapped it out with the powercommander and co adjustment but it's still a little on the rich side. Screenshot_20210405-211409.jpg

I got the bin file out the ECU and I'm waiting on a XDF file to have a play on tuner pro, which I'll have to do anyway with the larger cc 12 hole injectors. This project will never end, and I still enjoy it!

  11. Helllo!

I've been quiet for a while, So I thought a little update was due.

The 999 has been doing great, so nothing new to report! I'm just finishing a 916 restoration....

    SEE! I don't always ruin Ducati's!!

    ...A few more :)

It'll be ready for an MOT soon.

a few of you folks may also notice a new garage, Alot has changed since my last post. I finished my degree with a 1st and landed a job as a chassis design engineer at Triumph! So I now design bikes for real (....and properly!).

I'm still really keen to make the 'how to turn a 1299 into a sport classic' and when money allows, I'll crack on with that build. Until then, theres a few things I can update you all about the 999 when I have the time.

  12. If your bike is running the IAW5AM ECU then get yourself TuneECU. You will need an Android device. TuneECU will allow you to overlay the Power Commander map onto the ECU map. The PC111 software is pretty easy to use compared to TunerPro. I would have the bike to a Power Commander dyno and get them to create a map. Take a USB stick with you and get the map from them as well. Create the hybrid map, flash to bike and then remove Power Commander.

  14. I've made a custom map on tunerpro a while ago, I've got the innovate lm2 kit so I can test it quite easily. Recently it's started running worse so I'm going to dive in again and see what's going on. I remember before it wouldn't even run on a standard map. I tried one the other day and now it is... And revs. I'd ideally like to get away with a standard map. It's got R model cams and the 12 hole injectors so I'm thinking a 2006ish (later model) R model termi map might be ideal, just need to find one!
