Is It Normal For Cat B Bike To Have Numbers Removed

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by comesunt, Feb 3, 2016.

  1. He states (I think; only scanned it) that he has the frame number with the original receipt; you can hpi on this through a trader. Where does it it say no engine number? If both are missing & not available, I would run a mile. If the engine number is intact & he has the vin, you may be okay.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  2. I'd call DVLA and see what the official bods have to say on it.

  3. Seems a easy way to sell a stolen bike, buy a cat b with all the paperwork, steal the same model, grind the numbers off and sell as a track bike, dispose of cat b,you then have paperwork and a legitimate reason for no frame numbers, not saying this is the case here , just thinking out loud, have a look on copart at the cat b bikes they are well mangled up.

  4. I agree.

  5. Cat B can used on off road.

Lets say its been stolen recovered and the numbers have been tampered with then its off to the crusher.
If for what ever reason it attracted the attention of the rozzers you would have a lot of explaining to do and the receipt the seller gives would not provide immunity from the bike being size whilst the Police make their enquiries.

Ohh and lets not get in to the head ache when it comes to resale time

Walk away now and don't turn around

  6. My Monster 1100evo was Cat B after an accident. The bike was sold on by Copart (who dealt with it under instruction of my insurer) to a scrap yard who then sold it on eBay. The frame number had been removed. This is all totally legal. The frame had to be rendered such that the bike could not be legally used on the road. Instead of dismantaling the bike and destorying the frame it is more cost effective for the scrap dealer to sell the bike as a whole after removing the frame number.

If the bike is a Cat B and the frame number has been removed that usually means that the frame is damaged and is potentially unsafe. I really wouldn't want to use that frame on a track bike.

  7. Right.....It's make your mind up time.......Welcome to Motor Salvage Direct

Or, https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files/Documents/Publications/Public/Migrated/Motor/Code of practice for disposal of motor vehicle salvage.pdf

Scroll down to 'Responsibilities of the primary salvage agent.....'

Basically Cat A states: Must be crushed.....VIN removed asap unless stamped in ; Cat B should be treated as Cat A after salvageable parts removed. Under Cat B, shell/frame/chassis must be crushed.

    Note a V23 marker is required in A, B , C Cats.

Also a Notificaton of Destruction V860 must be issued for Cats A & B

    Also see 'Documentation'

PPS...Note that the ebay seller has ony been a member since 5th Jan 2016........Ain't half built up a lot of feedback in that time.

Or in other words, don't buy the bloody thing.

  9. All that info in my post means is, as I read it..............that bike shouldn't exist, not even as a race bike.

  10. According to Copart, you can't buy a Cat-B frame unless you have a special breakers license.
I was wondering the other day if all the Moto GP riders helmets had gold ACU stickers on them.

  11. I would steer well clear of that deal chap - it doesn't pan out and has drama written all over it

  12. No but they need to have untouched vin so can be checked if stolen or blank frame

  13. I would avoid it and he has pi$$ poor feedback so not worth the hassle.

  14. According to all the documentation (see links to that in my posts); a Cat B bike should not exist neither on the road nor on the track..........The frame must be destroyed.

  15. And that would be the reason for removing the frame number I suppose? Sounds well-bent to me, I'd avoid like the plague.

  16. Typical condition of a cat b,that 675r is mint,i cannot see any signs of crash damage,if it was a cat b to start off with it would have cost him thousands to put back to mint condition, smells very fishy.

  17. I might even be tempted to send the ad to the Old Bill. If they can be arsed you might break up some bike-thieving ring!

  18. Does it come with a log book and a set of stamps.

  19. I see from his feedback that he has only sold one item before....and he got negative feedback for it!
    Great statistics...at least he's consistent!

  20. A good mate of mine years ago was into Yamaha LC Proddy racing - cheapest Motorsport and great to compete in or even watch - Six abreast screaming 2 strokes into a tight bend, all arms and elbows, leaning on each other with no quarter given! Problem was they lunched engines at an alarming rate but wasn't really a problem as they were in current production and plenty in breaker yards! I remember pit crewing for him one weekend and a team of guys turned up in Prison white boiler suits with torches and notepads checking engine and frame numbers - well I can tell you it was a very slim grid by the time they had finished!
