  3. You can’t live a life without wealth. Or wealth enough§ to eat. Have fun. Heat your home. Alas the dole won’t cut it

  4. Conversely, there's no point saving up for a gold sarcophagus. Of course, there's always a balance to be struck.
    Namaste..:upyeah:

  5. So sorry to hear that :(

And that's why I retired as soon as I realised I could afford to. However covid19 and now this Ukrainian/Russian war is severely testing my pension pots

  6. Agree, i'll speak for myself but lowered heating dramatically in house today as need to get used to it in preparation for April. My Grandparents had basically no heating throughout their lives, day or night and both reached 90 plus years.

  7. It's knowing when that point is, what I observe with my friends/family and colleagues is a reluctance to separate themselves from the salary tit of plenty, not wanting to spend more time at home with 'the boss', or they have no idea what to do with the time.

  8. agree, I remember seeing the two extremes when two retirees popped back in after 6 months/a year, last place I worked. For one (Bernard) it was like a new lease of life, and looked much fitter, happier. The other (John) was worse than when at work, down in the dumps. It was clear that he wished he was still at work, very sad. Both gone now.

  9. Agreed. When I did the sums I realised I'd be better off cash wise (as I'd no longer be paying NI and into my pension pot etc). I would have to buy my own car after 30 odd years of having a company car, but I managed to cover that with a negotiated one off pay off from my company :upyeah:

I had plenty of ideas of what to do with my time. In fact I have no idea how I had time to go to work!

And as for spending time with swmbo.......I'm surprised, as is she, that we like spending time with each other :p

  11. We save a bit then spend it on holidays, then save again and spend on other stuff. Ive a pension that i pay into and thats it for our future. Ive never seen the point in working really hard and save all the money for that rainy day then something happens to you and all your savings go on your care. Ive seen that happen a few times.
Best holidays ive had was taking the family down to the south of france in the Stag, didn't know if it wold make it but it was an adventure. Bike trip to Pyrenese last year, have the Pecos booked for this year.
Live for now, life is too short

  17. Crash helmet on the way....thats about it so far....might get some draggin jeans....

Reasonably resilient...last one was a head on into a Ford Focus on my z1000 a couple of years back...

To resonate what the op said.....that was my outlook about 15 years ago....bizzare DIY accident led me to think that way (lost a lot of blood that day...) ....had 2 kids at the time but always talked about a 3rd....we now have a 3rd....
