This is a terrible tale. However, no system is foolproof and anything involving humans is going to throw up errors, from those in operating theatres, to Chernobyl to the exploding Challenger rocket. It's fortunate that these things seem to be so rare. Mind you, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a major enquiry and perhaps consequences.
Public Sector/someone dies= system failure/no one takes responsibility/"lessons will be learned" Private sector/someone dies=HSE investigation/corporate responsibility/someone is going to the choky... I generally stop at an accident and ask if my assistance or presence is required, unless it's obvious that the Emergency services are already on the scene. Don't we have some kind of civic responsibility to our fellow travellers on the planet?
I hear & agree maybe we should be having an enquiry into enquiries, if that's the case which I admit it often is. The police seem especially good at kicking stuff into the long grass. The vilification of the person who called the police is IMHO is just wrong. He may have called the wrong number, I've been in a position before where I wondered do I call 999 or just call the station to report something, its not always black and white. Given that you get it wrong with the right intentions going the other way, you're open to press vilification and then is there not a charge of wasting police time? Possibility of a criminal record for doing a civic duty. I am not intimate with the circumstances, but would there have been such outrage if the car had just been abandoned? Wonder how many others, who by passing by and doing nothing have evaded getting their motives questioned......................what sort of message does that send out? Personally yes I'd stop but some people have a huge aversion to the site of an accident and the trauma it may bring, we are not all rufty tufty practical types. A motorcycle forum I reckon would have an overwhelming majority of practical people attending it, but there are other personality types. I must admit though I was totally at a loss when it was stated the reportee drove past the spot 2 days later and stated that the site still looked the same, BUT as I said earlier what happens if it was merely an abandoned vehicle, or the results of an accident that had been looked into. You want to hassle the police.....in this case it would have been the right thing, but make a nuisance of yourself and like it or not its you that might get the "talking to". Commenting while looking through 20/20 Hindsight goggles is easy & just plain wrong and the press have a lot to answer for. I'm old so maybe out of touch but I do not like the way attitudes are heading with the knee jerk, bang em up, ban it brigade. Oh and @Lightning_650 I only quoted you to refer to my first para I'm not implicating you in any way to do with my feeble (3/10?) rant.
One thing I find it hard to believe is that there is any stretch of motorway anywhere in the UK that doesn't have a police vehicle or Highways Agency vehicle drive along it more often than once every three days. Maybe someone who knows more about this could enlighten me... Shouldn't this crashed vehicle have been spotted and investigated by "official sources" ?
well these experiences are alll very well,, there is a police car sitting in that spot with a sped gun almost every day,, well know speed trap spot !!
