Monster S4 Not Starting

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Astrauk, Jun 5, 2020.

  1. Hi, hoses in the tank look good and I drained the fuel from the tank just after buying it nearly 2 years ago. I checked the hoses in March when I replaced the fuel filter :upyeah::)

  2. By the way, there are special pliers to remove the injectors. They have 2 pins that locate in the holes on either side of the injector. So to get around that I placed 2 short dowel pins in the holes. 4mm diameter about 5 or 6 mm long, if my memory serves me right. You can then grab the pins with a good pair of adjustable pliers and wiggle the the injector out. I just looked at a spare butterfly housing I have here and there is enough meat to put in a helicoil to repair the thread holding the injector angle bracket. If you need to replace the casting, I have one here. It's from a 916 but it should be identical.

  3. if injectors have never been removed, bike has been standing a while and "O" rings stiff and old, you can still damage the injector tops using the correct tool - ask me how i know. I don't think the injector pattern is the root of the problem, just a contributor possibly.

  4. Hi, thanks for your comments and I used a hot air gun on the front injector aluminium housing before twisting and pulling the injector body out with a pair of pliers with rubber pushed over the metal jaws.
I have sprayed the stiff rear injector holding screw with WD40 and will try again to carefully remove the screw.

  5. You may have to cut a slot in the rounded torx bolt and then use a flat blade to remove. Make sure you block off the inlets to stop filings getting in.

  6. Hi Chris, I’ll attempt to remove the complete throttle body assembly tomorrow, that will give me better access to the dodgy screw :upyeah:

  7. Get yourself some of this.
IMG_0353.jpg It does exactly what it says on the tin and frees everything. Should be available in your local motor factors, but not Halfords. WD40 is not the best penetrant for freeing seized nuts/bolts/screws.

  8. Thanks, will ask my local Motor Factors if they stock it :upyeah::upyeah:

  9. Do they??

  10. Unfortunately not but I see that it’s available “online” :upyeah:

I spoke to my Ducati Independent Specialist yesterday and he confirms the suggestions of still blocked injectors or a problem with the fuel pressure valve. Secondhand set of throttle bodies (with injectors) purchased from EBay and on their way to me. However I also had to source the throttle handlebar assembly as that snapped when trying to remove the throttle cable. Cable adjusters seized at both ends o_Oo_Oo_O

  12. Hi Guys, Monster not starting update today, Tuesday, after receiving the Ebay secondhand throttle body assembly.
I have attached 2 videos of today’s progress, or lack of and am looking at the next items to check, namely the pressure in the fuel line and whether the petrol pump may not be providing the correct amount of fuel pressure.
Fuel pressure gauge on order and hopefully arriving by the end of the week.

  13. Good for you to check fuel pressure. The sound of your pump alone makes me think you have a internal fuel system leak even more than before. This pump sounds as if it's running freely. Mine sounds free for half a second and then slows down as it struggles against the fuel pressure building.

  14. Hi, thanks for your comments and definitely looking forward to checking the fuel pressure however not looking forward to removing the fuel pump if it is faulty o_O I still remember the difficulties I had when replacing the fuel filter back in March, not much space inside the tank.
One strange thing I found was a coil of wire inside the fuel hose going from the vertical cylinder injector to the fuel pressure valve  that gets pushed up the hose as the hose is attached to the fuel injector return outlet.

  15. The spring is 79911181B. No idea as to its purpose. Preventing pipe from kinking due to tight turn?

  16. Ah yes, that would explain it given the tight turn up to the fuel valve intake :upyeah:

  17. I second that.

  18. I'm not sure I understand the difficulty? You do take the fuel pump assembly out from the bottom don't you? dsc_6010_13.jpg looks something like this.

  19. Unfortunately not on the Monster, it’s accessed via the fuel cap but I wish it was as simple as the 748/916 setup Where everything is easily accessed at the base of the petrol tank.
