Nick Knowles Diy Sos For Children In Need Last Night

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by PerryL, Nov 14, 2019.

  1. I was in the kitchen cooking supper last night and the TV was still on in the lounge. It went on to DIY SOS with Nick Knowles. It must be me, as I find this sh1t boring now. Millionaire TV presenters putting on the working-class cockney accent and pretending they are rough round the edges builders, when in fact they are grammar school educated from well off families.

I did watch something on YouTube yesterday about people refusing to buy TV licences because they don't watch BBC, in particular, as well as any live TV.

I must admit to agreeing that apart from the BBC being overpriced crap mostly, the age of the TV licence has passed. You should either subscribe (like Netflix) or suffer ads (like ITV). It would mean that the BBC would have to change or die but I can live with that.

  3. I haven't had a license for years. I doubt I will ever buy another one. Netflix Amazon Apple etc with Youtube is far better imo.

  4. But is it worth paying for? BBC4 that is.

  5. And if it is worth paying for why can't people choose to do so without being forced to pay for BBC1/ 2 / 3 24 News Channel etc?

  6. I'm not a fan of BBC left wing reporting, 'their' overpaid celebrities, soap actors etc but when I can sit and watch say 'Seven worlds, one planet' or plenty other BBC2/4 and some BBC serials for an hour without shite americanized commercials that appear for 5 mins every 10 mins on every other channel, then I'll happily pay our license.

If and when the BBC have to be commercialised, much of BBC 2 and 4 in their current format will be a loss!

Compare some of the quality BBC4 programmes with say a Ch 5 pseudo documentary with it's dumbed down commentary, 'experts' views and cheap videos, I know which I'd pay for. Try watching one of the CBS channels for a hour or so, fecking rubbish, in my view.

I'm just an old grumpy git though!

  7. do you get hassle Jez ?

  8. Not really. I get a letter maybe every two months saying the are sending inspectors to the area blah blah. This has been going on for five years or more... I put them straight in the recycling.

They can send whoever they like -I don't watch live TV- but they will need a warrant.

  9. On Knowlesy, he does more than just diy sos and does a bit outside of the bbc and I think he is the only one who is a multi millionaire on diy. I rather like watching it as it reminds me not everyone in the world is cynical and we do, by default in the real world, help people if we can.

The separate issue of a tv licence, I doubt a big majority would be calling for it to be retained

  10. I got rid of mine a few months ago. I’ve had a few threatening letters but they go on the Woodburner.
    Do I miss it? Do I f###!
The next generation will spell the end of this tax as viewing habits have changed enormously.

  11. I don't pay for the licence. I'm not paying them to lie to me, and from what I recall TV was shite anyhow. Sure some of the natural world programs were a nice watch, but then they started being propagandised for climate change (apparently there was one recently showing walruses tumbling from cliffs, supposedly because of climate change...turns out it's due to overpopulation...there are loads of examples).
People accept that places like China, N Korea etc use TV for spreading propaganda, but think the BBC are above it! They are the experts!

I use Now TV sometimes for the odd sporting event, and Netflicks because my GF and kids watch it when they're at mine. And I am a Patreon for three youtube bikers which costs more than a TV licence.

Like Jez said, just get a letter every so often saying the goons are in my area - bring 'em on.

  12. YouTube and xhamster are my viewing choices these days.

  13. But once many people stop buying licenses, as they have Amazon Netflix etc and you then have to Pay £280 a year for the priviledge of BBC/ no ads will you want to keep doing so?

  14. I didn't know WTF you were talking about. I know YouTube but not xhamster. But upload_2019-11-14_15-49-40.png
    this place is so educational!

  15. Not quite. My friends Uncle Billy was an electrician, putting up a light in the reception of the BBC and a producer came up to him. "We are shooting a pilot and the electrician has let us down, would you be able to stand in for us?"

That was 20 years ago, give or take. Billy is from Welwyn Garden City, hardly Eaton.
