Hi there! I've just changed the oil and filter (checked the mesh too) and filled up the reqd amount. However, when I start the bike up, the oil level doesn't drain away and stays at the same level? It's on the top mark on the sight glass but surely it should lower during it running? I'm a bit panicked as my warranty is due up soon! (3months from where I bought it) Is this normal chaps??
If the oil light goes out then all is well! Perhaps you have over filled it. Remember that as oil temperature rises. So does its volume.
Hi there! 3 litres came out so I put 3 litres back in. it had an oil change 80 miles ago when I bought it but I like to use genuine Ducati oil and filter so that’s what I did. The manual said to use 4 litres of oil which I didn’t understand as that seemed way too much. It’s up to the top line and it just doesn’t move when you start it. No warning lights btw.
Hi there, no, I didn’t drain the cooler as it was only 80 miles old (and 2.5 months) I just put in what came out which was 3 litres. I just wanted to put in genuine Ducati oil as I didn’t know what the dealer had used. Probably a bit of a waste of money tbh but at least I know it’s right. It just doesn’t go around!!!
Hi there, Yes, no light but I’m used to the oil going from the sight glass when operating (on the zzr1400 I have) and to see if just sit there is a bit of a worry. I bought the bike as an ornament really (I’ve only done 80 miles on it) so it’s not like it’s being used. I just want to make sure that it’s safe and that it’s right?
Either tip it over to the left and see if you can see a level, or drain the oil out into a very clean receptacle and see if the level drops.
Hi there! I can see the oil level in the sight glass as I topped it up to the top mark. The oil doesn’t move from there when I start it up which is unlike any other bike I’ve seen. The level just stays there. I’m not sure if that’s right on a 996??
I have actually never looked at the oil level to see what it does when it's started. I only ever check when the oil is warm and the engine has been stopped for a few mins. I honestly think you are worrying about nothing. If the oil level is correct (as per the hand book) and the oil light goes out. Then all will be well. Good idea with the genuine oil and filter it certainly gives peace of mind.
That doesn’t sound quite enough, if anything, considering that you put a new filter on and also cleaned the gauze filter. Did you ‘prime’ the new filter by filling it with oil before you put it on? Are you sure you are seeing actual oil when you start it up or could it be condensation/a film/witness mark of where the oil was? Can you take a picture of what it looks like before and after running?
If the oil wasn't being pumped through the oil filter and the system then the oil pressure light would be on as the pressure switch is in the mail oil gallery!!
Sorry to be cynical , if you unplug the connector to the oil pressure switch. Then see if oil light comes on? Proves switch is working.
Hi there, I’m thinking about doing just that tbh. I’m trying to ignore it at the moment but as I don’t actually ride it out, I can take the time to see what’s going on. I can’t see how it’s normal for the oil level to not go down at switch on/start up! Anyway, a gratuitous pic!!
Nice pic!! Never thought to ask if the oil light illuminates when the key is turned on and that it goes out when the engine is started...!!! Surely thats been checked? If so then the switch is clearly functioning!! No further investigation needed. Just start, ride and enjoy.
Hi there all! Thanks for all your support with this issue and I had an issue with the switch connection and yes, the oil was circulating correctly as it turns out! I don’t think I gave it enough time to register it. Seriously, thanks for your advice all!!
