Orcas (killer Whales) - How To Scare Them Away !

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Mattie821, Aug 3, 2023.

  1. Remembering this post about Orcas, thought to have a little update:

Symphony is now in Hilifax, Nova Scotia. sailing up from the Caribbean and Bermuda during this year.

But the story of Orcas sinking a boat off the coast of Portugal within the last week - got the old brain thinking again about deterrence for yachts. This time we have the magic of AI !!

Put the idea into AI and asked for a pattern - and this is what it came up with - based on confusing Orcas visual senses that are sensitive to contrast rather than colour hue. The pattern would change as water runs over it causing a moving visual pattern.

If I had a yacht I would paint it like that ......:D

  2. I have been out in small boats and the idea of Orcas attacking the boat gives me the shudders, it really does. Somehow we have to defend ourselves without getting nasty about it.

Can't be just hoping for the best, they are sinking vessels now.

  3. You never see orcas attacking the boys in Deadliest Catch. In fact they often lead them to the bio mass!

  4. I read about this. I did wonder what I’d do faced with such a dilemma… Obviously a box of hand grenades would be frowned upon, not least by the Orcas. How would you dissuade them? I wouldn’t fancy facing a pod of irate Orcas o_O

  5. The question for me is why are they irate?

  6. I think that you should re-deploy your design skills Mattie, with a special revolving rudder that works like an angle grinder.

  8. Most probably because someone had just been throwing hand grenades at them? :eyes:

But why attacking boats in the first place?

  10. 10 years ago I met a woman in a bar who turned out to be a dating disaster but ended up as one of my best friends and what we first bonded over was our shared belief that far from being the cute anthropomorphised clowns of the sea, dolphins are in fact utterly psychopathic, not to mention also being sexual deviants (do some googling if you don't believe me, but not on your work computer). We firmly believe if they had evolved opposable thumbs rather than flippers and could hold a firearm, they would surely rise up and enslave us all. Orcas are a species of dolphin and so we have been tracking these latest and rather concerning developments, as we strongly suspect they are plotting something big, no doubt taking advantage of the political divisions in the US and Europe along with the fact that Russia is tied down in Ukraine, which leads us to suspect they may be in league with the Chinese or the Canadians.

  11. There’s a theory doing the rounds that they’ve been clobbered by the keel of one or two boats. And they’re not happy about it.

  12. That’s right. Don’t swim with dolphins unless you’re wearing at least two pairs of Speedo’s :D

  14. Not happy? Then why are the fuckers always smiling then? I'm telling you, you can't trust them.

  15. I have read a lot about Antarctic expeditions and I recall reading that the Orca would stalk the sailors on the ice floes when they were off the ship hunting. I’d assume they saw an easy meal of either the sailors or the seals they shot - or both….

Didn’t previously know about any of this more recent stuff - I shall go and do some reading…..

  16. But apparently they’ve never taken a human in the wild. They’ve attacked and drowned trainers in captivity, which I get. They’re probably driven insane with boredom. Some quite impressive stuff on YouTube with them interacting with people. Would I jump in with them? Nope…

  17. Nah me either.

I agree that due to their high intelligence, they would be bored shitless at SeaWorld…...

  18. Watch this but have tissues ready :bucktooth: It's about Tilikum the Orca in Seaworld.
