  1. Considering only 10% polled are 10% better off you are in the minority, but well done you, we are all pleased for you :upyeah:

  2. I was doing well until 2010. 5% 2009 then the following year 10%. Since the 2010 one though I've not had a rise :( Lucky compared to a lot of people though so can't really grumble

  3. I was earning more in 1998 than I am now.

  4. Got demoted and pay cut by c10% in 2009. Worked my way back to same salary now in absolute terms.

Luck (good and bad) plus being in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time shape most people's careers.

Global economic meltdown (caused by a small number of unscrupulous bastards who encouraged others with a modicum of intelligence and plenty of greed) screwed us all to some extent or another.

Happily, I have still managed to buy a Diavel, so some good has come out of it!!!!!

  5. Typically I have been getting a 3% increase on my basic salary, but that represents about 1/3 of total pay. I haven't had an above inflationary pay rise for so long I can't remember when the last one was.

The company I work for is doing very well though.

  6. considering the hours i do its the worst iv ever been payd. but if i was to put a price on not working for the man, i am positively loaded.

  7. I was made redundant at the beginning of the slowdown, spent some time self employed then took the current job I am in now. it was a slight reduction in pay compared to what I was on prior to the redundancy but I have since had a pay rise to take me to a little more.

However the hours I am now working are a massive increase on what I was doing (I've gone from approx. 50hrs a week to 70+ some weeks) so per hour I am earning way less with a lot more responsibility too.

  8. To put some context around pay, I have changed companies which resulted in an increase. However, in my last job I was easily doing 50+ hours when contract said 36.25, one of the reason for change. But my new role, I am doing either 3 nights away or at least 1000 miles a week driving as well as full days. So no better time wise but better money wise.

so if I based time v income I'm on less per hour than I was say 5 years ago

  9. I'm in the Navy and we've received some small increases over the last few years, but not enough to cover the increased cost of essentials.

I don't understand how official inflation figures can be so far away from how much it "feels" like it's gone up.

Because as with so much other "official " stuff, it is subject to manipulation . Crime figures, education standards etc etc, you name and they`ll fix it.

  12. I run my own small company and I reckon my pay has gone down by about 30% from 5 years ago. On top of that we were forced to move premises last year and my wife and I had to finance it personally and loan the money to the company which we still haven't managed to recover from the business yet - that was about £20k.

We suffered a large fire at the end of August which has destroyed our building, damaged equipment and stock. The insurance company are currently refusing to pay up, and if we don't win that battle then we'll need to find another £40k that the company doesn't have.

Even when times were good before the recession I was still earning less than I was in the mid-nineties, but that was my choice to leave IT and become self employed. Comparing then to now, I'm probably taking home now about a third of my salary from 15 years ago.

  13. I have been having a pay rise between 1-4%
Not that it makes much difference I think it's all of 16p but I have a job which pays my bills for now

  14. Set up my own business 6 years ago and haven`t regretted it once. Worked for too many arseholes in the past making them loads of money only to treat their staff like shit.
I look after my staff and they look after me. :upyeah:

  15. Bet you still work for assholes, you just take greater satisfaction in fleecing them more ;-)

  16. Just watching the news and they are telling us how the economy has recovered. What planet is this government on?

  17. Planet Self...its just outside Planet Charity and Planet Selflessness which are old empty dark places once occupied by the the Centauri Philanthropi

  18. I'm earning less than I was paying in tax and NI in my last job in 2008 but much happier now.Expenditure tends to exceed income but expenditure doesn't necessarily mean contentment.

  19. Was in Northampton today visiting my parents, had a walk around the town centre, no sign of any recovery there, absolute shithole, pound shops, betting shops and boarded up shops, zero prosperity.

  20. Sorry to hear your woes Gilps, I run my own business, I think if it got to a stage where I had to put my own money in to keep it afloat I would liquidate it and go back to working for someone else.
