Not sure about the SP but the genuine SPS UK models did have MPH clocks. Both of these models have been heavily imported so it could have even been imported here from new and the dealer didn't bother to change the clocks or imported a bit later. The important thing is that it is genuine and the date it was built sounds correct. My 1999 SPS was built in 1998, they all were, but not sold here until October 1999, so well over 10 months at least to get it over to this country and actually sold. They must have been around £10,000 plus when new as my SPS was sold new at £12,250 and some later ones went for £12,500 new!!! pretty amazingly expensive for the time.
This got me thinking about my "SPS". For me it was a spontaneous buy. I didn't do any research on what was what, I just knew I'd love a 748 and it looked a bargain. I have my doubts now. Is the only sure fire way to tell what model it is, to call a Ducati shop and asking them to check frame and engine numbers?
Oh definitely! Email Sofia at [email protected] with frame and engine numbers. Give a telephone number and she'll call next day (usually) with confirmation that they are associated, date of manufacture, registration and model. That's quicker than a trip into town for me.
I didn't win the auction. It went higher than I was willing to go. Someone got a bargain there though, £1760 for a genuine 748SP. At first glance it only needs a new front wheel and a screen to go back on the road.
That's disappointing, I must admit I thought you were a dead cert for getting it at a good price. No doubt something else will turn up and I notice the SPS that was on ebay for a good starting price has had nothing bid on it since the lister put the starting price up. After a couple of false starts he might start getting realistic and it could be a good buy if the price is right and it needs no work. It's always a balance, cheap bike and loads of extra expense or a decent one and little or no expense. I have done both and to be fair my last bike did work out well for good money and that was a track bike totally complete but with no engine. 748R engine in and a re-map and I had a great bike complete for under £2,800. I hope you see something else come up.
