He was King of the Franks though, whereby Alfred (Wessex) and Edward the Elders nipper were "self appointed" kings of England, so while the current lot are not direct descendants, they are as close as we know, which makes not a single bloody one of them "Royal" anyway. The only link to Alfred the Great was by marriage of Emma of Normandy to Ethelred the Second............which to my mind makes the Normans more prominent than the Wessex tribe.
But we all know that the royals of the whole of Europe are inbred. I wonder what they are going to do in the future as most of Europe has got rid of their royal families. I recon that they all should be sterilised at birth then they can die out naturally and with dignity. Should save us some taxes too.
... except, of course, for the royal families of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Monaco, and Liechtenstein.

I've always liked all the Royals! Especially when all the affairs and marriage bust ups came on top- showed me they are human and fuck up like the rest of us? Edward is an odd one? Film producer/programme maker??? Made one film about the Queen mum (bless her) and obviously had a bit of an easy in to that one
