I did a day’s enduro training with one of my mates from my cricket team yesterday and it turns out that his father in law’s next door neighbour took that photograph. Apparently he’d heard that they were going to be testing a Lightning that day so he thought he would get a few snaps to try out a new camera that he’d recently bought and just happened to be in the right place at the right time. His back was turned but he heard the explosive bolts of the ejector seat go off, turned around and took the iconic shot. Unfortunately for the pilot, his landing involved crashing through the roof of a greenhouse and he was badly injured as his legs were shattered and he had numerous deep cuts from the glass, but thankfully he survived. The manufacturers of the ejector seat bought the rights to the photo and used it in their marketing materials. The location of the crash is actually about a mile away from where I thought it was.
