1200 DVT Rear Wheel Nut Size

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Steve m, Jul 14, 2016.

  1. Tried to get mine off at the weekend, had the Mrs sat on the bike pushing the rear brake on, then used 3ft breaker bar and steel socket 3/4 drive but couldn't budge the bloody thing. Soaked it in WD40, and will try "shocking" it with a hammer when under load.

  2. It's difficult shocking it whilst weight in the bar .... assuming you are Gona hit the breaker bar with a hammer .... it just twangs back .... mind it doesn't twang back in your face or even worse hit your missus in her face ...... my missus has never forgave me ......
Have you any local hgv or commercial tyre fitting places nearby , take your socket and breaker bar to them , they will have extender bars that will slip over your breaker bar and make it 6 foot long
You sit on the bike with the brake on and get the fatest mechcanic to swing on the bar ..... It will crack off ...... then apply beer tokens for the help

  3. hence why many trackside have spent £200 ON A RECHARGEABLE IMPACT DRILL THINGY

    oops caps lock

  4. Thanks Lee, I'm at work now till next week, I'll try your suggestion, why they are all so tight baffles me.

  5. I have a the most powerful snap on battery impact gun ..... use it everyday , they are powerful but by no means will it undo everything ... on car applications that is ..... six foot long inch drive breaker bar never fails mind .........

  6. When I change my ones I put a dab of paint on the nut and threaded part as a helpful indicator to show if its moved, I know there is a lock spring on there as well but if that should be lost through theft or falling off I have a second visual indicator

  7. Or if you can find a handy length of stout tube (steel water pipe or scaffold tube) slip it over your breaker bar and use that.
I then tighten mine up as tight as I can using my breaker bar at its normal length - never had it come loose in 30,000 miles on me or my mates bikes doing it that way.

  8. The same 55 mm socket also fits a lavatory cistern, I find.

  11. I have one of these, works well for undoing the rear wheel nut on my MV. Maybe stating the obvious but not to be used for tightening...

  12. Thought I'd add my experience after a fight on at the weekend and following posts on this site (thankyou all) !
Tried to remove with 3' breaker bar and Moto MFG socket with no signs of moving.
Soaked in penetrating fluid, tried again first with cheapy pneumatic impact tool, then bar and scaffold pole with bike on side stand and the mrs on brake pedal, still no luck.
Left overnight to soak, then tried again with a borrowed Clarke electric impact wrench and after a few pulses, nut released no problem.
Whilst I was on, released the sprocket side too (normal thread direction btw), took more to move but again came off after a few goes.
Didn't do the socket much good though ![IMG]
Now off to find decent tyre deals !

  13. Never in the world do they need to be that tight ! Ridiculous!

  14. That clarke impact tool looks like a must then, one item for the crimbo list :)

  15. Got to say, very happy with mine.

As to socket; I bought a Speedymoto stainless one from the States having bought and returned an Oberon alloy one that inspired no confidence given its light weight and fairly thin walls, didn't even use it. The Speedymoto one you could load into a Canon, fire it through a brick wall, pick it up, dust it off and use it. It'll outlast both the bike and me. Did slightly mark the nut on first use, despite what the website said it's not got the taper that the MV nut has. However, this hasn't gotten any worse since despite removing the wheel quite a few times. Also can be used from both sides so you can pass an extension though the hollow axle if you wish.
