Interesting what you say about the 14t change, I had not picked up about the wear on the sliders - the comments I read I understood to be about the increased wear on smaller sprocket but now you say it it makes sense. I went 14t as it was the cheaper option and the existing chain and sprockets have done 6k miles. My logic being it was a cheap simple change that I could try out and if I liked it I could subsequently replace with 15/42 and a new chain. Does that make sense?
Yes, I can see your logic. I don’t which bike we’re talking about but be aware that on many it’s very tricky, if not impossible to change the front sprocket without breaking the chain and removing it.
