748 Replacement Coolant Expansion Tank Thoughts?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Chris.King1, Apr 18, 2019.

  1. Going to replace my coolant expansion tank, after the summer. Has no leak, but a worthwhile replacement due to the plastic can possibly split.

    Few options...
    EVR do a carbon one...https://www.carbon4us.com/en/carbon/5274-evr-carbon-expansion-tank.html
There is a Kevlar one, although brand unkown and they can not provide me the technical data sheet...https://www.carbon4us.com/en/carbon/8218-ducati-kevlar-expansion-tank.html
    and finally Aluminium version...https://motowheels.com/i-14138876-corse-dynamics-aluminum-coolant-tank-v2-748-916-996-998.html

Maybe the sensible option is the aluminium one (or al-lume-min-nem if your from accross the pond), but looks so ugly. EVR you would guess is good quality and has a sight window. The Kevlar one I quite like, but the company that sells them will not give details on their testing for this at high temperatures, probably because its bull.

    Any thoughts?

  2. What's wrong with the factory ones as my one split last year and probably was the original one from new,was replaced with O.E/£35.00:thinkingface::upyeah:

  3. Can’t go wrong with the alloy one. Not sure I understand the ugly bit as you can hardly see it when fitted.
If it’s for the colour, they look ok powder coated black.

  4. Nothing wrong with the original but there are some forum members who are on their 3rd or 4th. I suppose after all that hassle of changing them that many times, the price for an aftermarket one becomes worthwhile. :upyeah:

  5. actually it looks ok on the bike. Im not worried about coolant sight glass, as it gets changed each year anyway. Where did you purchase it from? Im now thinking carbon or kevlar looks a bit bling like now.

I heard that that the sensor that sits on the right hand side of the tank's top can interfere with the steering damper as the pins are not quite in the right place and the aluminium tank sits that little bit higher than stock?

  6. Very poor plastic technology that's not compatible with high engine running temperatures:thinkingface:

  7. Not sure about the pins and their use as mine’s a 998S and the air sensor is located near the headlight bucket on mine so I cut the pins off. When reading up on Ducati.ms about the tank, it seams a few people removed the pins and just used a bit of velcro/ gorilla tape to fix the sensor.

  8. A tad higher but not much. :upyeah:

  9. I had the original for years but when it failed I then went through a series of replacements that all did the same, I think it was 4 or 5 with one leaking from the very outset and a couple only lasting a few months.

I fitted an ally tank, not the Motowheels but one made by a chap from a US forum (no longer does them) and have had no bother since.

I wouldn't bother with the Ducati part again as they're crap and you'll get no warranty. The EVR/Kevlar look good (can you really see it?) but are you sure it'll never leak? Due to it's construction I know my ally tank will never leak but even if it did it could be repaired.

The only downside is you can't see the coolant level as it's not transparent but that also applies to the EVR and I've never needed to top-up anyway. On the plus side the ally tank acts as a heatsink so might help cooling, as for looks, I think it looks fine but you can hardly see it anyway...

  10. If you're replacing with OEM, I followed someones advice and cut 1/4" off the rubber bung that is theres to stop it wobbling about, some think that it applied pressure when the tank expands causing the split. I found it also sits on the frame below the tank, so added some pvc tape.

PS these are a PITA to get the filler cap off without sliding the tank back aren't they?

  11. Yes! Proper PITA.
Done a couple of hundred miles so far this year so yesterday I checked the coolant level. All good.

  12. Took me ages to figure out why I was loosing coolant, sometimes very slowly, sometimes dripping after a ride. Then on a track day I was getting mist on my visor, again couldn't see where it was coming from! Bit the bullet and pulled it apart to find the split in the tank!

  13. Are you going for the alloy one? I reckon it’s a good investment if keeping the bike.

  14. No I bought an original, must admit my inner OCD couldn't cope with not being able to wiggle the bike to see the coolant. I wonder if there's a way of fitting clear hose?

  15. Hi guys. I have just gone down the route of fitting one of the Motowheels tanks. i'll echo was has been said uptheread about them. They look a tidy job.

I must admit, knowing what a faff it is, I paid a guy at a local (not Ducati specialist) garage to fit it. He told me he had to file away a bit of the pins to get the sensor to fit. It is then orientated 180 degrees rotation from the stock position. However, that doesn't seem to matter, and sensor and its lead are clear of the tank and airbox when everything is refitted.

But let me say this: it is an eye-wateringly expensive business. And it took a long time to arrive, around three weeks, as I recall. Enough that I had no bike on the road for all the precious good weather of August.

The unit cost $280. Postage was another 40 bucks, making it up to $320.

Then taxes and import duties cost another whopping £109 sterling!

It all adds up to a lot of money, especially when the stock unit is only, what, about 40 quid. But I've had two of them fail in the last year or so. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

  16. Seems dear that. I’m sure I paid less then £200 inc taxes.

  17. same here, I paid £190.00 inc tax and shipping from US. I made them an offer in their eBay store. Not fitted yet, as winter job.

  18. Not making me feel any better, guys!

    Still, it's fitted now.

  19. I did that as well but IIRC, the tight bastard only knocked a tenner off.
