Replacing Belt Tensioner Bearings 900ssie

  1. I replaced my timing belts yesterday and also the fixed tensioners.
    My plan was to also replace the bearings on the adjustable bracket but I failed at that.
    I removed the bracket from the engine and tried with mild force to get the bearings off but no success.
    After spinning them and deciding that the are good for another two years I reinstalled everything.
    But I do want to replace them the next time.
    Any ideas on how to get the old ones off the bracket?
    I did give it a try with a puller and some WD40 :-(
     
  2. the two side-by-side bearings should be the easier to remove of the three, so probably corrosion. All you can do is more of the same (soaking plus a decent puller). If really stubborn then heat will do it, even a Propane flame will be enough and doesn't matter about slightly overheating bearings as you are replacing anyway.
     
  3. WD40 is just a light oil lubricant. Plusgas is more corrosive for rusty stuff. However if you can soak something overnight evaporust very good.

  4. You need to use more 'persuasion'.

    They do require some force and, if you have applied said force and not removed them, you may have made the situation worse by damaging them?

    I had a very slight amount of play in one of mine on the Monster's horizontal cylinder and it caused the belt to track slightly off line, leaving a deposit of rubber dust in the belt cover.

    As for fitting the new ones, use the old: freeze the shaft, warm up the bearings and you'll get them on without resorting to the big hammer. :astonished:

    The bearings are cheap so if there's any doubt, change them.

  5. Sorry, but the belt "adjustment" bearings shouldn't require much force to remove as std, they are a slide/light interference fit from new and never ever had a problem with these. On the contrary, the "fixed" bearing assy needs to be removed with caution as an equivalent of Loctite was used on thread fixing at times* which can result in partial thread stripping upon removal cold.

    P.S. you should never fit these bearings with a hammer!

    I do have Plusgas and some other good stuff, I´ll try them later.
    Decided to use the bike for the upcoming 2 trackdays and then give it a try again.
