  4. My father, grandfather, and brother all died before they got a penny of whatever pensions they might have been entitled to.
I was determined to take the plunge and retire soon enough to start collecting a bit. So I did.

  5. ? i'm curious. what happened three months ago? did you have an off?

  6. We all think in our minds we will live well into retirement age but the reality for many is very different.
In any case, once you get to 70+ physically you will struggle to do all the things you did even ten years earlier so you won’t need pots of cash to lead a reasonably simple life.
I suspect those who are under 40 now will maybe never know of full retirement unless they are proper wealthy.

  9. it's weird reading this thread and thinking these people are old, then realising i just turned 62. just can't imagine retiring anytime soon, not because of economic reasons, because i'm loving what i'm doing and it's not at all physically taxing and i get to travel a lot. having had multiple family members suffer dementia, i'm keen to keep the grey matter as challenged as possible.

  10. Your job makes a huge difference to views in retirement.
I’m fortunate that I can do my job on a part time basis from home as I semi retire and give me some extra income.
    We are all different.

  12. And in your position I would do the same, although there is an argument that you have already retired because if you love what you do it isn't work. :)

Unfortunately I am forced to deal with a number of morons whose IQ must be as low as I'd like my golf handicap to be, so I will be going at the earliest opportunity. There is a date in mind beyond which I will not go, but it may be brought forward if things get worse at work.

  13. Retire as early as your financial arrangements allow. Once the big things like mortgage/loan repayments etc are sorted, you'll be surprised what pension income is satisfactory for a fulfilling retirement. BTW... You'll hear people on their death bed wishing they had another day/week/year but never another £k. Time is the most valuable thing you have. Use/enjoy it wisely.
