An accident is still the same result JH, like I touched on earlier, why then are premiums lower for older drivers if their the greater risk. My own opinion is people should be made to ride motorcycles for X amount of miles before being allowed to try their car test.
There premiums are not low. The final time my Mother renewed the premium was over £1000. This was with no accidents, claims or convictions on a 15 year old Suzuki hatchback - automatic 1300cc, I think that it was. Her company, Direct Line I think, would not talk to me and so I spoke to my bike insurers. They told me that the premiums for people in their eighties are getting so high because they are putting in as many claims as younger drivers.
The old people around here (well New Milton to be specific) seem to favour driving into shop windows - think they struggle with the brake and accelerator in their 3 litre automatics My father's driving at 86 was just starting to worry me before he got ill - at least having ridden bikes he was massively careful at junctions. His insurance premium was pretty high given he had a clean licence, no claims and low mileage.
One of my mates 18yrs old son's quote, genuinely, on a 1200 Astra, was £11,000, they did after negotiations bring it down to £10,000. And this was before he wrote it off, then a short time later he wrote his next car off resulting in him having his leg amputated. Believe or not he still drives like a test. Don't get me wrong, obviously there does come a time, if your lucky, when you do become incapable of driving.
He could have spent £30 every day of the year on taxis plus saved the maintenance, fuel and price of the car and still be ahead. Thats insane.
Gotta admit, my dads driving is flakey these days to say the least.... I think his eyes are ok it’s just everything else. He’s 78.
