Scorpion Trail 2 On Multi Dvt...how Many Miles?

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by rob lewis, May 3, 2017.

  1. Hi there tyre Ducati Tyre gurus....

Would love some advice here.....I have a 2016 1200s Touring and it has the original Scorpion trail 2 tyres on...I have done 2500 miles in total....

I have a Alps trip planned in July which will cover 2800 miles in 11 days....Guided group tour so riding will be relatively sedate....I going as rider only and luggage....

Will my Scorpion trail 2's see me through the next 2800 miles?....I'm very reluctant to buy new tyres at a cost of £300 including fitting as this add's a huge additional expense to the trip.

I don't intend to do many miles now before trip as i'm busy with work...

All advice will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! THANK YOU...

  2. Are you an aggressive rider, do you "give it the beans", are they more than half worn ?

It sounds a big ask, but not impossible, to me.

I would also add that the handling on my 2012S turns to rat shit long before the tyres are "worn out".

  3. IME the original tyres supplied with the bike tend to last longer than subsequent changes. I got 6000 miles out of the original Scorpions on my 1st generation Multistrada, whereas the subsequent set of Angels were shagged in less than 4000 miles. Most people seem to be able to eek out at least 5000 miles on a set so you should fine. Not sure why you are paying £300 for a pair of tyres, I just bought a Pirelli 240/45/17 for the Diavel from a local tyre specialist and it cost £112 (£120 fitted). Andy

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. 4400 Miles on first rear 5700 first front

    3500 second rear

So I would say change rear - you probably will be OK - £130 + Fitting Openeo

  5. Cheapest price i was quoted for a set of 01's was £260...and fitting onto bike a further £50.....Wheres the best place to buy? cheers for the info Andy...much appreciated.

  6. £50 for fitting says he doesn't want the business to me. My local tyre fitter charges £7 for a loose wheel. Not sure what tyre retailers you have in Huddersfield. A bit surprised your dealer isn't cheaper, I understand Ducati UK are supplying tyres to dealers at a discount. Andy

  7. 3k miles on the rear, front was pretty buggerred too. Change then and improve the handling too. Not a fan of scorpions...

  8. Multi goes in for first service in july and they quoted me £358 including fitting....i nearly fell over!!!

  9. got 2700 from my Scorpions. Would not expect them to last, my front was shot, rear on wear bars. Scottish roads may have been a factor. If the tyres look good, why not set them aside to refit? Wouldnt risk it personally but I do like new tyres for a big trip.
Seen people set off with half worn tyres before only to cause big problems part way through a trip.

  10. Many thanks for all your advice guys....decided I'm gonna get a new set and put the Scorpions aside for a spare set!!!...there too good to bin!

  11. Whether you should change them largely depends on what condition your tyres are in - if you've been hard on them you may not get much more out of them.
However, I managed to get around 8000 out of my rear and 9000 from the front!

  12. Wow.

  13. "Wow" indeed, unfortunately I was thinking of something else, apologies - I actually got somewhere around 6500 miles out of my rear Scorpion Trail II and have now done about 4000 on the replacement and am expecting similar mileage to the old one.

  14. Holy crap !! You must be a very gentle rider to get that ?? :eek:penmouth:

  15. Still wow for 6.5k ? 3700 and my rear was completely buggered, gave a good excuse to junk those crap Scorpions though and put some proper road rubber on....

  16. I don't think I'm a particularly gentle rider; I'm not mental but I 'enjoy' riding hard and fast (where appropriate). Maybe the mileage I get out of the tyres is partly because I tend to avoid motorways and boring A roads (apart from when on long road trips to France/Germany), so the wear pattern is pretty well spread across the tyre?

  17. I suspect it is hard acceleration whilst upright that flattens off the rear tyre rather than outright miles and there is only so much scope for wearing the sides of the tyres on public roads to maintain the profile. If I was doing long motorway miles I might be tempted to limit the engine to 100hp to help preserve the rear tyre.

What do you think @bradders ?

  18. Keeping the traction control on probably helps too.

  19. I hardly do any mway and like to think my bike spends a bit of time on its side ;). But I don't really accelerate hard either. Not really. Rarely go above 6k revs.

But it is maybe noticeable that the scorpions did about 1000 mway miles as I trawled back and fourth from Snells and other places just 'getting there and back'. Also worth saying that a PR4 rear lasts about 4K for me but once it's worn it's not just the middle, it's all over. The scorpions went from having over 1000 miles left in them to bare and borderline legal in about 100. Same as most Pirelli tbh

  20. On motorways, surely the power makes no difference as you're going at a fairly constant speed ? So if your bike is set to 100 or 160 bhp, it makes little.difference as its the same bhp used for a constant speed ?
