Security Chains

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Cream_Revenge, Apr 5, 2017.

  1. So, who uses what?

I'll need/want something fairly long so I can chain bikes together.

Does chaining bikes together make them about as safe as a ground anchor? I guess in theory you could drag 2 bikes into a van but would be hard going.....

    Cheers

  3. Im looking at some at the mo, oxford, mammoth etc

  4. I've got a garage but I use two Oxford Hardcore locks to chain my bikes together and a screamer disc lock on the R, and lock them front wheel to rear wheel.. at the end of the day if someone really wants to take something they probably will but reckon it would be a ball ache and time consuming to get them out....

  5. Has anyone thought about or actually fitted out a chain themselves

I'm talking about buying a fucking great big 22-25mm chain and whacking a decent lock on it?

Edit: I'm currently speaking to a maritime specialist about some grade 80+ ship lifting spec chain. May even go for the 120 alloy.

  6. Buy it from Pragmasis or Almax - job done

Chain from ship needs to be hardened and plated and debrittled if you want it cut proof and rust proof.

  7. Surely just stick a cover over the chain?

Something like a 100 grade alloy or 120/140 is going to be a shit load stronger than a motorcycle chain..

  8. It needs a tough core to resist hammer blows and help resist tensile and freezing and hard case - to resist the hacksaw cut attempts.

Plus someone has already done the work for you?

  9. I'm sure it'll have a much tougher core than most. They use this stuff to hoist ships and for lifting on building sites.

I'd wager most bike chains are probably only 8-30 grade alloy. Some of the ones I'm looking at are 140 grade.

I'm looking at a better product for less money. Just because it hasn't got a brand on it.

  10. I talked with Steve at Pragmasis some years ago

He buys in Ship chain then heat treats, plates and debrittles.

I believe Almax does similar also.

I agree string is probably better than most of the cheap brands.

  11. +1 for Pragmasis/Almax - much better than the other mainstream bike security chains IMHO. I have a 19mm chain through a ground anchor and onto a pinch pin through the back axle. Either fire up the big noisy angle grinder or remove the swing arm to get my baby. Oh, and get past the dog, alarm, CCTV and Sound Bomb!

  12. @Cream_Revenge and not just buy pragmasis 19 or 22 mm chains and ground anchors, make sure they can't get in, pragmasis sells these wonderful over sized goodies too IMG_1397.JPG

  13. fitted with 8 supplied coach bolts!

  14. Watch independent tests on you tube, real eye opener !!
The Oxford chains were all breakable with large bolt croppers, so called '5 minute attack proof ' were bolt cropped in less than 5 seconds
Only one that was rated was the Almax brand, I bought one myself not long after.

  15. Almax all the way... with Squire padlock. I put the chain through the rear wheels of my bikes and ensure the chain is off the floor, which makes it difficult for any would be attempts to cut with an angle grinder

  19. worth it thou, have a look on the Almax website, they have a wall of shame gallery with you tube video's where they crack loads of their so called expensive competitors in about 20 seconds, very funny to watch, but not if its your bike!
