WCP... Don't the annual service which is 2 hours and the oil service which is one hour carry out the same non defined 20 checks? I'm guessing they spin the wheels, check tyre pressures, check other fluid levels, a visual check of fasteners and lights. All of which can be done whilst the oil is draining. In a previous life I was a mechanic and all will have to have their 37.5 hrs (?) documented for the week, thereby bonuses can be earned and everyone is happy. Except the customer who pays twice as much for an annual service than an oil service which are the same thing probably. It's just the way of things and most bikes these days will need something removing or loosened to carry out the service unless it's a fully naked of course. Again to a trained franchised mechanic these procedures are known and quick. When it comes to franchised vehicle workshops it's strange that many offer a cheap 3 year service deal on the new car, I had this on my Beemer and now on my Hyundai, I think the Beemer was about £300 and it's a similar amount on the Hyundai for 3 years and first MOT. In the case of the Beemer out of its service deals but not out of warranty oil changes were around £250 about 3 years ago. But we buy what we buy and servicing is no surprise when it comes to cost, but how can my Hyundai garage carry out 3 services and a MOT test including failure cover for £300 when they'd probably charge well up of £200 for a small service; especially has claimed here they're not making money on selling cars/bikes. Someone somewhere is telling Porkies. Upt.
The 1hour Oil service is the first service at 600miles/1000km. Annual/Oil service thereafter is 1.8 hours.
Yes agreed, but doesn't it state the same checks are carried out. And it doesn't take 2 hours to carry out the work. It's just the price we pay to keep our books stamped and the FSH description for resale. As an aside, I've just had my Hyundai seviced for the second time, the "big service". I don't know how many hours they would charge normally, as I've pre paid. But, I dropped it off at 0830, oil and filter, brake fluid, air con service, brakes, suspension and tyres checked along with body examination. The cars...not mine. Even a full video report. 90 mins from start to leaving the premises with a gleaming washed car. Pay your two hours, I've done it too, but don't think they're working on it for 2 hours because they're not. £300 for an oil change and a kick of the tyres is too much. They charge it because you seldom have any other choice. In my own case it is 50 miles to the nearest franchised motorcycle dealer, I'd hardly ride further would I. Upt.
There are a few more checks on the annual service of the Supersport the subject of this thread (1hr 48mins) compared to the first oil service (1hr), all of which take time which is where the extra 48mins come from. I can tell you from experience that’s how long it takes, in fact it’s a struggle to complete the services on any of the range in the time Ducati say.
So I’d just like to say something in praise of dealers. I’ve been out for a ride this morning and when I stopped for coffee I noticed the fork was leaking. As I was not that far from Pro Twins I popped in to get it booked in. However the mechanic stopped eating his lunch, cleaned the fork, popped the dust cover, cleaned it again, tried to run a cable tie round the seal, packed some grease on the dust cover and replaced it, and did a final clean up. He said that this would just help me get the bike home and back to them for the replacement without losing so much oil and potentially contaminating the brake pads. Sure enough when I got home the fork leg was still pretty clean. Charge for this, which took 10-15 mins of his lunch break? Nothing…
