I agree with Viv. I am more aware of bikes when driving because I ride one. Maybe part of the car driving course/test should include learning to ride a bike. Surely that would make every driver aware, wouldn't it?
A bigger push by the manufacturers for the sixteeners is the obvious way to go. Get the yoof on two wheels before they're old enough to consider a car. Not only will it give more road users an insight to biking, and hopefully make them more aware of their existence, but surely it would help bike sales too. Quite honestly, now the bike trade is in the doldrums this would have been my first course of action - cheap bikes (and I mean bikes, not scooters) with insurance deals and bike kit built into the deal would see more bums on saddles and give them better road skills too.
