As I said earlier............Major error of judgement..........camera on; recording transferred to laptop and retained.......... What 'could have / would have' been done without that error is quite frankly neither here nor there..........Prisoners get shot in all conflicts, regardless of nationality...........But actually, what the eye doesn't see etc etc EG...........WW2....Japanese prisoners booby trapped themselves with grenades..........I expect many got shot either by UK or US forces... Kosovo and Yugoslavia are another example of brutality towards prisoners. Unfortunately in this instance, the only other people I recall filming prisoners being shot / murdered and retaining the films for posteriety generally wore the Totenkopf badge; so in my opinion, Marine A has put UK forces in a bad light to some degree. As for the retention of the camera recording, many soldiers have keepsakes from conflict.......Vietnam for example where some US troops apparently paid their combat colleagues to collect dead Gook's ears etc..... Does keeping trophies make them serial killers in the usual sense........Who knows?? As for Plebgate.......I always understood taped recordings weren't admissable if the person/s being taped weren't aware.........so I fail to see how the MP's recording can be admissable either. AL
As for Plebgate.......I always understood taped recordings weren't admissable if the person/s being taped weren't aware.........so I fail to see how the MP's recording can be admissable either. Although now well publicised, the recording has not been presented as evidence in a court of law has it ?
Its a shame he didn't just say look out in a genuine manner I think hes booby trapped and shot the c##t anyway.Who in there right mind would argue then. Im sure these animals would think nothing of becoming a injured suicide bomber (they carry grenades yes) taking you with them on there way out even if your were trying to give them medical aid.In that situation under that pressure id rather shoot them from a safe distance and then approach and answer any questions later.Surely this is self preservation. I bet if they had tried to give aid and Terry blew himself and the Royal Marine Commandos up we would be looking at this very differently. Why take the risk.Would you.
Quite right.......and I suppose even more reason for it's accuracy to be questioned.............Just sayin' like....
No i wouldnt, and as barbaric as it is, I wouldnt choose one of their blokes over ours or the yanks. Its all fine and dandy, us sitting at our computer screens preaching what is right and wrong, but its quite another when there are bullets whizzing over your head and your best mate is laying 12ft away in a ditch with his guts hanging out...Common sense and humility dont seem quite as rational as revenge i guess.... i despise the chinless, ball less politicians who have put our blokes in that hell hole..theyre as deplorable as the scum our lads are trying to kill.
My thoughts go to the forces out there on remembrance day, and to the soldiers who will never come home, and the ones who have been injured or disabled in combat by those pigs.
Marine A should not have done what he did, it was a major error of judgement, but I struggle to condemn him for it. I just find the incident very sad.
Heres another thought. Tell me how different this is from throwing bombs amd ,issles into areas of high populatiom with mainly civilians at risk? Apart from he has the balls to do it face to face rather than someone pressing a button miles away
i find it deplorable when you see videos of troops (usually US it has to be said), taunting the locals or offering kids bottles of water and then driving off, only to stop and offer them the water again etc....the kids are an innocent party in this whole mess, and they are being abused by the adults who are brainwashing them with lies and fairy stories of sky wizards and virgins in paradise. i feel more compassion towards the donkeys and goats that get blown up as collateral damage than i do about the crazy muslims hell bent on taking the infidels with them..
Which in itself is totally ridiculous. If taped evidence proving guilt exists it should be admissible. As to the marine? Murder is murder, there has to be rules, with no exceptions.
You just don't execute prisoners. Full stop. You particularly don't execute them on camera and pipe up that you are in the process of contravening the Geneva Convention. And then you don't keep footage of your stupidity on a lap top (for what?). There are some rules in war and British forces are expected to abide by them. Marine A didn't and was fully aware he wasn't. He was bound to go down. But he'll be out in a couple of years. If you're fighting a war of civilisation vs barbarity descending to the level of the barbarous removes any justification you have for waging the war in the first place, no matter how tempting it is. It also gives the Taliban a justification for murdering any British prisoners they may have. In war the enemy is always seen as subhuman which is necessary as soldiers are there to kill and maim them. The reality here of course is that the Taliban are just mainly normal backward Afghan peasants who want to indulge in their our internecine conflicts without outside interference. Exactly the same story with the Viet Cong in the Vietnam war. They are the same people who make your shoes and t shirts.
This country is becoming shite when we prison this person. Fecks sake, he killed a savage that would have no inhibitions to murder innocents. Good riddance I say!
You obviously have no connection with the military. That all failed the service test to the extreme. Hopefully they all get booted out. All demonstrated a lack of judgement and no moral compass in not reporting the incident. and before all the keyboard warriors start. Yes, I'm in the military and yes, I've been in similar situations myself. Just because the enemy doesn't sign up to the Geneva convention, we still do and still obide by it.
no not at all. I fact for a few years it has been against task force Helmand standing orders to wear such devices.
I always find it odd that we have 'rules' of war, I mean it's a war that's started because of some fundamental difference of opinion/act of aggression/not following the rules etc. where all the players do their best to kill, maim and otherwise fook each other over but then we have rules that we are supposed to follow. It's OK for us to invade another country without a valid reason/threat and then bomb/shoot the shit out of them but we can't break the rules - baffling IMO.
Having been to afghan twice as a soldier and again as a civilian... Having seen prolonged suffering from a violent death... Marine A did the poor bastard a favour and I can only hope than should I be in a similar situation as the dead insurgent that someone will have the back bone to end my suffering humanely. Soldiers kill people. Some times people only half die. If you are ever unfortunate to witness the suffering that some unfortunate fellows endure then you'll probably feel the same. Just don't film it and don't tell anyone. He will go to prison, I can't argue with the law. But you only get in trouble with the law if you get found out. I imagine helmet-cams will be banned in short order. Edit: there's a lot of talk in this thread about rules, savages, Islam blah blah blah. Try thinking about from a human point of view; you're going to die no matter what. You are in incredible pain. Seems to me that nobody considers the idea that sometimes it's better to put a stop to it. You'll put your dog down when it gets hit by a car to end it's suffering but you wouldn't do the same for a human being who can tell you how much it hurts?
