So what have you done today..?

  1. Give my best wishes to Perry , when you see him.

    :Mooning:

  2. I bumped into an old acquaintance this morning.

I said, "What you up to these days?"

He said, "I prepare meals for the homeless, druggies, piss heads, unemployable, and down 'n' outs."

I said, "Ah, so you work in a charity drop-in centre?"

"No, I'm a chef in Wetherspoons."

  3. Loads if I go to Ducati Manchester ;)

  4. Drove to Newcastle and back picking up No.1 daughter and all her gear from Uni.
Roast dinner for tea and off to Jacks Hill cafe on the Multi. Now drinking beer :upyeah:

  5. I bough a new iMac. Cheap MacBook Pro mid 2012 up for sale now.

  6. Hope you got a fusion drive or the SSD with it. The bog standard 1To disk is dog slow.

  7. I was lifting the front wheel today.

Not sure why, so tried Google.

  8. Glid, I just got the standard model.

  9. Well, if you find it not fast enough, know that you can swap out the disk for an SSD, though that is simpler when you order it. iMacs come in 3 flavours, normal disk, fusion drive, SSD. SSDs are more expensive, so you pay like £100 more to have a disk that is in fact a quarter of the size of the standard one: 256Gb instead of 1 To. The Fusion Drive is a halfway house. It maintains the large standard disk, but adds on a small SSD. Clever software organises it so that the stuff you use most, or bits of the system, sit on the Fusion Drive. The cost of the Fusion Drive and the full SSD are the same.

We have found the performance of the standard iMacs without any SSD to be disappointing. Has Apple optimised OSX 10.9 for SSDs? Who knows. One thing is sure: these days the bottleneck in your computer, if you haven't got an SSD, is your disk. I am typing this on an aluminium Macbook. It's not even a Macbook Pro and is about 5 years old. But having swapped the disk for an SSD, it is now pretty fast - in fact for what I want to do, very fast. It is way faster than a brand new Macbook Pro out of the box - the one with the old-style disk. Interesting. So although they keep pissing about with processors and clock speeds, it's not making any difference to anyone, unless they are doing processor-intensive tasks like 3D animation. For people who want to send emails, do the internet, write letters and use spreadsheets (unless they are calculating the 5-year plan for some huge state), it's not really making any difference. But put an SSD in your machine, and it's like adding nitrous to a Morris Minor.

You can think of your disk as a shelving system from Ikea. There isn't any point having one that goes around all the walls of your living room if you've only got 20 books and a handful of CDs. Most of the customers I see don't need 1To of disk space. I have so far used 300 Gb on my computer - and that is all the work I have ever done on a Mac in 25 years, including no small amount of photos and a fair old music library.

    Hope all clearer now.

  11. Glidd, I have been experimenting with gopro stuff and that eats hdd space. I'll probably not even notice the difference in hdd speed. I'm happy to leave it as it is :)

  12. Are you turning it into a Morgan motorcycle!

  13. Well today we've been to the Monza race circuit, and for 12 earth euros each, we've seen some fantastic motor racing and had pit lane access too :) Thoroughly recommended.

Now back at the villa sat by the pool in 35C with a cool beer. :)

  18. I'm glad about that, as you are the owner!
Yes, video will eat up a lot of space.

  19. You didn't say if the BMWs had Italian plates. The whole area is normally swarming with Germans, or German-speaking Swiss. It's not far from them and is so much more exotic and interesting than their own places.

  20. They were Italian plates. Only two bikes I saw that were "foreign" were two kwaks that were Swedish.
