I've finally finished my kitchen garden gate project. It might not be perfect, but it's a garden gate. Before: After
Just got back from hospital with all clear to start walking without crutches at last after 9 weeks of hopping about.          .
Finally got the insurance for the bike and recieved my new Shark vision helmet ! Just need a machine now.
I spent several hours in the garage doing a long-postponed and very boring job: sorting through boxes and boxes of old nuts & bolts, oddly shaped springs, rubber grommets, parts taken off cars I sold 10 years ago, and bits of various motorbikes. The purpose was mainly to throw in the dustbin parts useless/damaged/rusted beyond all possible value, work out what needs plating, and establish how much stainless steel I have so I don't needlessly order new SS screws in sizes of which it turns out I already have enough. I suppose everyone has to do this eventually.
I agree that even some worn out piece of crap might be useful one day, e.g. as a sample if you have to have a new part made specially. But some bits are so utterly fucked they will never be of any conceivable use even for that. Parts from vehicles I no longer own definitely go in the bin.
My old man would obsessively keep pretty much anything that "could come in useful". Quite often it did, or it would have done if he knew where it was. Now he has alzheimer's (well, he is 90, what do you expect?) not only does he not know where it is, he isn't interested in actually doing anything that might require it. No chance of a clearout though - he wouldn't like that. So spare a thought for other people who may one day have do deal with your pile of potentially useful things.
When my brother died, he had a lock-up garage full of a lifetime's accumulation of stuff (and he was a truck mechanic). I had to deal with it, but had very little time. In the end most of it went for scrap I'm afraid. I am under no illusions!
Since you ask, I like Mercedes cars and have had them for 25 years. Used to have S Classes, now downsized to a C Class estate. Plus a small Peugeot for SWMBO.
I keep old nuts and bolts and all junk. Every now and then I use them to fashion a tool or device in order to get something that refuses to budge to budge. Ive still got odds and sods from my old GS750's and I recently found some parts from my old Katana. Maybe thats why my garage is a tip.
