Sp5 For Sale...but Something Doesn't Look Right...

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by Bridgland, Apr 19, 2021.

  1. Had a quick look under the tank. 4 injectors are there, cut away air filter top and the engine has been tuned. Also lots of drilled bolts so has been raced. You can see the difference in finish between the headers and cans.

  2. 851/888 Forum up and running OK now.
OEM windscreens are as rare as R'ckin Horse Poo, but pattern ones are available from a few sources.

  3. There is a guy called Fred Jean on facebook who makes a decent replica with the Cagiva logo https://www.facebook.com/fred.jean.374

I have bought a couple from him and they are pretty good.

  4. Quite pricey for what it is as only really for track use and certainly not for the highway,Imo

  5. Ordered a screen from Fred Jean, looks spot on. He also commented that many of the bikes had an altered frame prefix when they got their SIMA plate on them. He has a friend who has one so will send some pictures of it.

  6. Got my log book back so have sent off to Ducati to see what is what. The engine also has been rebuilt with blank cases as well so curious to see what's inside with it being raced before.

  7. Engine is now out and I dropped it with Slick Bass last Tuesday in the IOM along with the 926 Corse motor for my mate. Stripped the 888 one and the cases are shagged on it unsurprisingly so after a set of ST4 ones to replace the scrap ones.Have brought back all the engine cases, barrel and heads to get them cermaic coated so trying to get a match for the green/grey colour for the cam caps and outer covers. at the moment. All the blanking plates need removed from the barrel, heads, etc so need to get the burning gear out to get the countersunk M6 allen bolts out as they are all stuck solid. Rest of the bike is in very good nick, shock has been rebuilt already. Dropping the spring off for painting at the mates later.

  8. when you say the cases are "shagged", is it the structural integrity (cracks, stress marks...) or just excessive surface corrosion?

  9. Hi Alasdair, interested to learn - What were the visible / measurable signs of cases that need replacing?
I can imagine maybe signs of cracking, mating face distortion, spun main bearing problems, or is it something else?

  10. Lol - beat me to it !

  11. For the green colour you are after try Hi-Spec Coatings in Sussex (Both myself and Bridgland have used them before and they are excellent). If you look on their website, then you will see some images (might be on their social media pages come to think of it) of some cases they did for LuigoMoto in just the colour you are after. It's not cheap but then quality work never is.

Edit: I found the link for you:

I think the Cerakote colour is called "Sniper Green", though Wesley at HSC, will know exactly what it was.

  12. The right hand cases is cracked as in the picture and the left hand main bearing is also loose in the case so scrap. I have bought a set of nice looking ST4 cases from the US for just over £150 delivered so they will do just fine. The early cases seem to be made of cheese, the roller race mains with the preload seem to give the cases a hard time.

  13. Many thanks for that. The pungters I use are pretty reasonable to get stuff done as I use them a lot for stuff.

not quite the colour you are looking for, but the quality of Wesley at Hi-Spec Coatings is excellent.

  15. That is a bummer. Check in with Stig from the 851 and 888 forum as he has done this change on his engines too.

  16. It's revving the motor over 10,000 rpm that kills the cases.

  17. Trying to sort engine parts out for the rebuild, the OEM shells (11210071A) are NLA for the Pankl rods. Ducati list Pankl rod shells for the later bikes as 11210121AB, does anyone know if these are a direct replacement?
The crankcases are just about stripped, work has got in the road in the last few weeks so not much progress and lots of bits to find for some other engines that I am getting rebuilt at thew moment.
