848 Starting Issues!

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Curtis Reid, Jan 17, 2018.

  1. Hello all,

Not sure if seen before but a bit of back story 1st, I have just replaced a failing "stator" after my last 1 was cooked by a bad regulator which was then replaced by the Shindengen FH012AA. Replaced a few worn internals whilst doing that and after being the 1st major work I have done on a vehicle I was chuffed when it started up 1st time.
Filling up on coolant was an issue as the workshop manuals instructions on said procedure are less than clear, however took her out for a short ride to top up the petrol with the onus on a longer ride come the weekend.
Weather was crap so couldn't but had a last minute doctors appointment at a specialist some 15 miles away so thought why not. So got there and back and apart from the TPS obviously needing resetting she rode fine there. On the way back she overheated a few times (see the crappy workshop manual instructions for filling up the coolant rearing it's head) but as I was 90% of the way home I crawled back at 25mph.
Removed the front fairings the following day and filled the coolant up directly into the radiator so as not to cause any further issues.
After filling the radiator and checking all pipes and cables, I had her idling till she hit temps for the fans to kick in which was taking much longer as it did previously so I gathered all was working as expected, then suddenly she shuts off, think nothing of it and start her up again, idles for another 3-4 minutes and shuts off again just as if I'm flicking the kill switch. This time however she doesn't start up again, so I turn off the ignition wait a few minutes, alarm automatically kicks in (Datatool S4 Red), disable alarm, ignition on, fuel pump primes, turn off kill switch, press starter and nothing.

Now I have been looking around this and other Ducati forums and have noticed a few points such as the headlights turning off when the starter is pressed which it IS doing as normal, the fuel pump primes, the bike is 100% in neutral, kick stand has been bypassed by the previous owner and I have attempted to start her up with the clutch held in anyway and still nothing. The trickle charger was left plugged in after my ride so the battery is definitely holding voltage of 12.3 give or take, when she started up the voltage did go up to 14.2 give or take so the stator and regulator are working as required.
I have checked all the fuses and they are fine, checked all connections, reseated the battery, ensured it's fully charged so I'm a little lost as to what the issue possible could be or I may just be missing something.
I also have the data cables and have connected it up to Jpdiag and TuneEcu and they report no error messages and all the tests to the various components (Fans, Ignition, Injector etc) work and complete as they should do.

So...sorry for the long as hell rant but...any suggestions??? :worried:

  2. Sorry to hear your problem. Not sure I can help much, but for starters (sorry...) the instructions in the Ducati "Workshop Manual" for re-filling the cooling system are just plain wrong! The system will never fill completely if you try to fill via the expansion bottle - it has to be done through the radiator cap, which requires a ridiculous amount of disassembly.

Back to the (non) starting - just a couple of thoughts. When you press the starter button do the lights dim? Does the solenoid click? If you're feeling brave you could try shorting out the solenoid terminals with a spanner or similar and see if it turns over. If it does, check the solenoid wiring.

    Good luck.

  3. There's a small plug that pushes into the back of the solenoid that can come loose, you might have cought it while working on the bike, it's worth checking.

  4. Thanks for the response... Yep I learned the cooling issue the hard way haha but at least I'm satisfied that it's now as coolant filled as necessary!

Regarding the lights, yes they do dim when I press it, in fact they switch off completely! Is there any instructions or pics on how to short the solenoid? As it's not something I'm aware of!

  5. If your lights are dimming when trying to start it then forget my previous comment.

  6. I just changed the rad on my 1198S - filling is a real PITA! Don't know who "designed" it like that.

I've never tried the shorting-the-solenoid thing, just read about it. Hopefully someone will come along with how to do it.

  7. Hold a screwdriver or spanner across the two heavy duty terminals on the solenoid, be firm it might spark a little if your no firm.

  8. Thanks for that...I'll give it a try after work tomorrow!

  9. just a gut reaction after skimming through thread - worth checking installation (have found many fitted shoddily) and possible faults with that version of Datatool alarm, I don't know how old the alarm is but from past experience I would remove it anyway if bike were mine.

  10. Personally, I would associate lights going out on pressing the starter with battery connections, if not at the battery end, then at the other end of the cable(s)
Also, 12.3 is not that much.

  11. Aren't the lights meant to go off when you press the starter? they do on my 1098 which is normal.

  12. This is what I have read on a few forums here and Ducati.ms! I'm leaning towards it being the alarm but I want to try and rule out anything mechanical on the bike 1st and foremost... And seeing as it was running for nearly 20 mins before it cut out I'm quietly confident of!

  13. Maybe the circuitry on your 1098 is designed to allow all the current to go to the starting and ignition circuits during starting.
What I am referring to is when all the lights and dash come on at switch on but everything cuts out as soon as you press the starter button.
This is symptomatic of corrosion on the battery terminals which will then give a good enough connection for lights and dash but that connection breaks down with the enormous current draw from the starter motor.

  14. The headlights go out when pressing the starter, not the dash etc, if that happened it would obviously indicate something a lot more severe but it's only the headlight going out in my case which I have been lead to believe is supposed to happen.

  15. Not terminals then.
Do you lose your clock setting?

  16. 12.3v would suggest a duff battery. Try a new battery.

  17. Which is what I was getting at with the clock-setting question... ;)

  18. Doesn't it depend on where/how the voltage was measured? On my 1198S I get about that voltage on the dash when I turn the ignition on (which obviously turns on the lights etc, so puts a load on the battery); this figure rises to mid 14s when the engine starts. If I connect a DVM across the battery terminals I get a higher voltage when the ignition is turned off, which is maintained for several days without a charger. FWIW I took the battery to a couple of garages and had them test it under load - checked out fine.

I didn't know about the headlights cutting out by design when the starter is operated - sounds sensible though.

  19. Do you lose the clock setting when you press the starter button?
If so, the battery is a problem, if not the problem.

  20. Batteries are ALWAYS worth checking on these. Listen to uncle ChrisW
