Stm Slipper Clutch Spider Spring

Discussion in 'Wanted' started by Cream_Revenge, Aug 22, 2016.

  1. The clutch pack is from the stock kit.... I will say it was marginally better this afternoon on the way home from work...

Looking at the stm diagram mine doesn't have the steel plates at the back.... Rich took them out as he said they would drop down the back...

  2. My STM has a steel floating about at the back.

  3. Think im gonna have to learn myself... Trial and error.. What's everyone else's clutch pack thickness...?

  4. Try 4 springs.

  5. But that would make it slip... As in while it's running wouldnt it?

  6. Depends. Should be ok on a new stack. If it does put them back in. Literally a 2 min job.

  7. I'll give it a go tomorrow... Thanks for the suggestion...!

  10. Yeah slippers should start with a friction plate first, otherwise when the back torque raises the drum a steel plate could drop down the back of it. You say Rich removed the first two steels did he not use them at all? One of those is usually the dished one which should help it to be less grabby, mine was never grabby at all until the spring snapped then it became almost unridable.

  11. Yes.... There is a "wavy" plate in there.... He did mention that...

  12. That's a very official get-out clause.... I think (well I do) most people accept that anyway...

  14. So, did the lithium grease thing last night. First downside....ive got a bit of clutch slip (only in top gear if I crack it open) but I know why....missed a post where the op said you had to get absolutely all the grease off....I didn't...so gonna do that tonight...

Upside: Had 3 hypermotards and this is now the smoothest clutch ive ever had...id say on a par with my 64 plate z1ooo....no graunching or surging forwards anymore....rode home late last night from my mates place in Staverton down in somerset back to Bristol and I was getting some slip in the high end of the rev range in some gears, but less this morning on the way to work. Just for the record ive used black lithium grease where as the op on the .ms site used white lithium grease so white may be better but others had used black also.

If I get chance at lunchtime I may take it round the side car park and go and see the lads in the workshop as I reckon it might only take 10 minutes to clean it all up...

  15. Just fitted the new spider spring with my new torque wrench. WOW, Thems a lot of torque!!!! Crapping myself I'd strip the thread.

    Hopefully test ride tonight......

  16. Good man comfysofa, glad you gave it a go, Rich has still got my bike, he's giving it a complete once over so we know where we are at, and then he is playing with the clutch, though when I spoke to him last week I think he is waiting to see if option one works before the lithium trick. From memory there were som posts saying they had a little slip to start with but that soon went away after use.

  17. Yep - on Saturday I cleaned some excess out - not a great deal but its been a little better....I have read that some people have used a blow torch - the ones that plumbers use to bake the lithium grease into the plates...something I was going to try at the end of the week.... the crucial bit is that the clutch (forgetting about the slipping) is the best its ever been...on any of the bikes ive ever had...(Ducati's that is!)

  18. Did you cook the plates in the oven? Apparently it stinks.

  19. Nope - I suppose the blow torch option achieves the same result....I think the side affect of cooking a set of oil clutch plates in the oven is divorce....

  20. Apparently the trick is to cook lots of bacon afterwards. Which is a win/win as you get bacon :)
