I would get the forks serviced first before making any changes to settings. There is probably at leat 15 year old oil in those forks which is useless.
It's on the to do list. Along with a lot of other stuff. Found a place online today that serviced them for £120.
Whereabouts are you? Revs Suspension in Halesowen made a brilliant job of servicing and doing a stage 1 revalve on my forks. Now as good as any Ohlins stuff.
Oh and i will guarantee that you will NOT be able to slacken off the rear ride height adjuster and will have to replace it.
Just north of m25. Trouble is I have a very long list of bits that need doing so I'm just going to have to work through it bit by bit as I don't have the cash or time to do it all at once and I really don't want to go stripping her down now the suns about to turn up. Just want to get her mechanically sound and keep improving her little by little. Going for a ride Saturday morning so hopefully she should turn a bit better. But at least my chain is clean now.
Rear sag done, was 45mm! Now just under 30mm (didn't have my kit on). Its not an easy job on yer own.
Front forks 1G was 16mm without my kit on, changed front preload measurements from 20mm to 17mm but I can't check what that puts the sag to till later.
Put a cable tie round the fork slider and the shock rod. Slide them to the top. Suit up, sit on bike (don't bounce) and ta daa 1g sag can me measured from the tie. FWIW it's a one man job if you think about it and measure what travel's left rather than what's been used. But you need to have measured unloaded length of suspension first which is easier with help or an ABBA stand but only needs doing once if you write the result down.
I did it with the help of my 72yr old mum on her knees in my garage sticking a bit of insulation tape on the fork leg when I was sat on the bike and then measured the gap when I was off. Couldn't get back up bless her. Promised her I would never ask her to do it again. I have seen the cable tie approach but what I'm not sure on is if it is tight enough to stay put how do you get it off, don't want to scratch my stations with snips, etc.
Hacksaw. Love that you're aiming to learn all this, and should be encouraged so ignore some of that lot ^^^ where do you live, maybe a forum member local can come give you a hand or meet up?
@1037sps has been fool hardy enough to offer a hand to get it spot on. He is about 2 hours away so its just finding the time and when suits us both. I think it should be heaps better now as the sag was so far out. As you say, learning lots, about more than just bikes......... I REALLY want to know this stuff, my little lad is 5 and my little dream is for him and I to spend our time together playing motorbikes in the garage for years to come. I don't want him and I to have nothing in common in 10 years time, this is something we can do together for the rest of our lives.
leave it on............you can then see how much of the suspension travel you are not using when you ride it on the road....coupled with the fact that it'll feel too hard you then soften it down to use all the suspension travel.....
Cream ...whats your area of expertise? Did i read IT.........or do you own a whore house, distillery, wine shop, indian restaurant, or anything else that might be useful in a swapsy....
