996 Swarf/metal Flakes On Back Wheel

  1. That looks (at least in the pic) too far forward.
Check the bolts are both there and fully tightened and that the bracket has not snapped.
Do it soon or your bike will be on the deck!

  2. Hope these pics help.

    1 .Side stand bracket
    2. Coolant plastic bottle
3.C Spanner for chain tension adjustment
4.Swingarm pinch bolts - torque wrench (think its 24nm)

  3. Ok here are some more pics (after a quick re arrange of the garage to put it next to the wall). Both screws for the bracket are there. The pic of the lean angle is with the front wheel pointing straight forward.

Should the side stand have that 'kink' in it?

  4. The little kink at the bottom of the stand is normal, looking at your picture from the rear of the bike the lean angle doesn't look to bad to me, I have seen a lot worse. The lean angle does change when the chain is adjusted due to the concentric hub.

PS Great plaque you have to the top right of the door.

  5. Well its shite weather time anyway, so you can spend lots of hours in the garage taking this bit off,cleaning/polishing and then putting it back on.When I first got mine,I bought a bargain bucket of stainless capheads of ebay.I used these to replace the standard cheese bolts as I took something off/replaced.Its a good way of making sure everything is where it should be/checking condition of/tightness of etc and making yourself more familiar with the bike.Have fun.

  6. Hi Keith, could you point me towards a similar bargain bucket please?

Garage has been rearranged so the bike now leans towards the wall so if it does do it will only be a few inches then the mirror will break its fall!

I have also left the steering lock off (massive chain and ground anchor attached so if they get through that the steering lock would not stop them anyway) and pointed the wheel to the right to keep it as upright as possible. I will get OnYerBike to check it when they do the cush rubbers. Its quite hard to check a side stand with no paddock stand as you need the side stand.

When I first spotted the swarf on the rear wheel I picked it up on the front wheel/side stand so the guy that spotted it could spin the back wheel, maybe I bent something then?

Its also making a slight knocking/clicking sound when I push it around, thinking that may be the cush drive. Either that or I have not put the back brake in right after checking the pads. Again, hard to check without a paddock stand.

  7. A paddock stand is almost a necessity. I always remove my rear wheel when I'm cleaning the bike. One bolt. Easy peasy. As someone said, you can strip all the bodywork off in 15mins. Including the tank.

Bargains are out there. Just know how much something genuinely is and pay no more. Put cheeky low bids in. Sometimes they win.

  8. Eccentric ;)

That looks like the worst prepped bike for sale ever.

  10. Just spoke to Baines racing, they think I have bent the side stand bracket. apparently you can't bend it back again. Whoop, another £100. Off to buy an Abba stand now.

  11. You'll get used to it. Mine bleed me dry. Who needs new jeans and new tops? Me? Never. I can have bikes and be scruffy or I can be dapper and walk.

  12. I think I have a spare bracket.
PM me if interested and I'll send you some pics.
Personally I'd leave the ABBA and get a cheapo paddock.

  13. Sidestand lean doesn't look that bad to me in the picture of your garage.Im not a fan of the ABBA stand and went for a FG Gubellini paddock stand instead.Rock solid bit of kit.

  14. I think paranoia is on full swing.

  15. Hi Keith. What do you mean by stainless capheads and cheese bolts?

  16. Bootsam, you should get that made into a T shirt, not that I could afford to buy it mind

  17. Let me find someone who knows more than me to look at it first (should not be too hard to find) and then I will know if I've buggered it and need another or not. Mine is the 2002 so it doesn't automatically smash the underside of the bike. Are these different?

  18. It depends how anal you are about keeping it original.Me, if I removed something, I would replace the fasteners with stainless allen bolts when I put it back on.The allen bolts were bought off ebay as a pack with various sizes in....mostly m6.

  19. Keith, so would that be why when I put the back brake back on the bolt kept turning when I was expecting it to stop?

  20. I replaced the side stand on my 998 with one from a 1098. The foot is larger which is nice on softer surfaces and the stand is a little longer so the bike stand up much better.
